Women of Du, what are your beauty secrets?
Share with the group!

I have worn sunscreen on my face since I was 16 years old. It has worked for me.

I quit wearing heavy makeup around my eyes several years ago because it accentuates the wrinkles.

I drink the juice of two lemons and orange juice mixed with water every day. Lemon juice helps with elasticity in your skin.

Give me your tips ladies!

And I moisturize my face after every shower. I'm 40 and still occasionally get carded. I think it's more genetics than anything though.

my younger sister looks about 15 years older than me. All do to lifestyle choices. We have good genetics in the family though.

23. Lifestyle definitely plays into it.
Both my younger sisters look a bit older than me, mostly do to overexposure to the sun. Thankfully, though, they have both stopped sunbathing and going to tanning beds, and their skin is improving. They are both very pretty; don't get me wrong. But all the years of sun exposure was not good.

63. Well...
Genetics are a funny thing. I have a complexion much like your's, and dark brown hair. My older sister is a blue-eyed, blonde. While you are correct about lifestyle choices having an influence on youthfulness, random recombination of genes also has a say-so. Not saying you are incorrect about your sister and her lifestyle choices. Just saying that the genetic aspects are the luck of the draw. One does not always get the "good genes". I sure wish I had my younger sister's ability to eat whatever she wants and still not gain weight...

5. My most recent one is taking 3,000 mg of vitamin C every day.
Within 3 days of starting that, my skin was looking and feeling so much better. I tend to get spiderveins on my face and upper chest, and they have almost completely disappeared.

I use body wash instead of soap, and use lotion after a shower.

I don't lay out in the sun or use tanning beds any more; haven't in about 10 years. If I want to look tanned, I use tan-in-a-bottle.

For makeup, I use Bare Minerals. Best stuff ever.

I also eat more fruits and salads.

Can't say I'm a beauty queen, but I don't look too bad for being almost 54, IMHO.

27. At 65, I don't have beauty secrets :-)
What I aim for these days is to try to avoid looking haggard. I exercise a lot and try not to frown very much. I wear a little lipstick sometimes, but that's it. I use Nivea lotion on my face every day.

A doctor I just went to for a checkup told me I look 45 or 50, which made me happy. :-)

36. Thanks!
I think the best thing I've done for my skin is to avoid the sun as much as possible, unless I'm wearing sunblock. When I worked at a paleontological site and was in the sun for hours a day without sunblock, I perspired a lot and drank huge quantities of water. Maybe that combination is what has, so far, kept me from getting a lot of wrinkles. Tomorrow I could wake up covered with them, but I'm not going to worry about it, because doing so could bring on those wrinkles today. :-)

I highly recommend Nivea - the oily kind - with a few drops of water. Except on the nose. Noses don't age much, and oil attracts blackheads. :-0

29. Drink tons of water
eat lots of fruit and don't put chemicals on your face.

Less is more: make-up makes you look older, washing your hair every day and putting crap in it dries it out and forces you to buy more crap.

I'm 33 and still get carded all the time, plus I have freakishly shiny hair and I spend virtually nothing on beauty products. Go figure.

Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 06:42 PM by lildreamer316
I take MSM, Vit.C; Biotin; Milk Thistle; Gotu Kola; CLA; Coconut Oil; and several other things..all these have an effect on my body; skin; and hair. I also use coconut oil on my hair; rosehip seed oil and camellia oil on my face and skin; and a Retinol every two days (one should step up to Retin-A product if possible). I've also made my own rosacea treatment with milk thistle and topical MSM.I have on hand jojoba oil and grapeseed oil to add to my other oils. Sometimes I use the Oil Cleansing Method to clean my face; but I find that I do not need to wash my face every day - it dries it out too much. I just managed to finally get some Argan oil for my hair (found in the enormously popular Moroccan Oil hair care line) and I'm really excited about that. I also drink at least two cups of green tea every day. I've been told that emu oil helps to carry whatever treatment you put on your skin past the barriers and to penetrate better; but since it is animal-derived I'm hoping to find an alternative. There's a small jar of fair-trade shea butter on my nightstand also..nice for really dry skin. Castor oil on an old mascara wand helps my lashes to grow (be careful not to get it in your eyes). I have yet to be able to afford to make my own CoQ10 and DMAE creams/serums; but it isn't that expensive to do.
Oh! I also add Vit. E oil to my serums and take some as a supplement every week.

Lots of info about making your own beauty treatments that are very effective at these sites:

http://www.smartskincare.com (has a downloadable PDF that you pay a small fee for with a lot of DIY skincare recipes in it; this site is run by a doctor and this was carefully researched. He tells you when what dosage has been shown to be effective and when it hasn't; but may be. Everything based on studies and trials. Highly recommended!)

http://www.makeupalley.com (skincare forum is best; and there are HONEST reviews in the review section. Learn about the notepads that members have; lots of great info there about what really works).

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum

http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/home.html

MUA (makeupalley) rec's sunscreen every day; a BHA or/and AHA; and a retinol product to start.

A BIGGIE for me: I do facial exercises. They have worked for me; but some people do not advise them. Since everyone's skin is different; you should judge for yourself - but they definatley have really helped me.

ETA: Dry Brushing of the skin - I do this every night and before every shower.

44. Take Vitamin B Complex (good for hair and skin),
stay the heck out of the sun, and use good eye cream. IMHO, good skin care products do make a big difference, and they don't have to be really expensive. Olay has some fantastic products.

This is going to sound really lame, but it's the "look" on your face that really counts. If you are happy and peaceful on the inside, it really shows on the outside. :hi:

65. Another Oil of Old Lady fan here...
There are few products for which I am "brand loyal", and this is one of them. I have been using their "Regenerist" products for a few years now, and occasionally the "Definity" line. The moisturizer I use has sunscreen in it, which probably does more for the skin than anything else in product. I used to have a brown splotch on my cheek, which I couldn't get rid of even with fade creams. It's almost gone now.

Facial products aside, genetics and healthy habits go much farther than what one smears on one's face. Consuming lots of water, fruits and vegetables, and getting lots of sleep and exercise sure do make a difference. A good hair cut helps, too!

Presto!

51. Well, I'm not very old
...but I do have good genes in the family.
And I wear makeup with sunscreen in it.
Lotion on my face after every show. And take my vitamins.
My mom is almost 45, but she doesn't look it at all. My dad is almost 45 as well, and doesn't look it. My grandmas both look a lot younger as well.

56. I have very fair skin--
So before there were decent sunscreens, I stayed out of the sun. Now I use sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat if I am going to be in the sun.

I have used baby oil on my eyelids every night for 45 years. Had I known how well it would work, I would have used it on my neck and around my mouth as well. My eyes have very few line around them.

I am 63, but before I let my hair go gray nobody believed it.

Now, I don't really care if I don't look particularly young--I am OLD, after all. What I resent is being treated as if I have no brains just because I look like a sweet old lady.

66. Lush face products.
I use Fresh Farmacy cleanser and Grease Lightning spot treatment. I really like Gorgeous moisturizer - but I'm trying to stretch my sample of it as far as it will go, because the full-size one is way beyond my budget - it's the most expensive item they have.

Their fresh face masks are fabulous as well.

I had horrible acne that would not go away until I started using stuff from Lush.

1. A wide brimmed hat anytime you're out in the sun.

2. Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E skin cream. $3.79 for a 2 pack, Cheap!
Apply twice a day.

Here is the result. I'll be 58 the end of November.

74. Moisturize and stay out of the sun
At 49, I have very few wrinkles but the fact is, the condition of my skin is the result of genetics. I smoke. I drink coffee all day. My diet is nothing to brag about.

As for moisturizers, here's the truth: I doesn't matter a damn what brand you use. Skin can only absorb two things - water and minuscule amounts of collagen. Lotions and creams are sealants. The trick is to apply the stuff on damp skin. Granted, some formulations are lighter/heavier, and we choose the one that leaves our skin feeling the way we like it to feel. But as for all those "revolutionary formulas" and ingredients - it's all bullshit. I've been moisturizing my face with bargain brand hand cream since I was 12 years old. I've used some of the most expensive and lauded face goop ever produced and the results are no different than my trusty bottle of St Ives body lotion.

76. I tend to agree with you Blogslut
I smoke like a fish and drink like a chimney (within reason) and I use cheap facial products and have very little damage to show for it other than some fine wrinkles I'm discovering around the lips and chin from smoking. My mom, dad and grandparents all looked younger than they really were. But I've also made a habit of eating and drinking especially healthy things that are good for the skin. LEMONS are your friend.

80. I'll add a caveat
My problem with the marketing end of the cosmetic industry is the lying. While ingredients such as Vitamin C, Grape Seed, etc. may improve the appearance/texture of an individual's skin, the improvement is topical. I've seen too many ads that claim this or that ingredient "goes deep down under the surface of the skin". < That is an outright lie. Our skin is a barrier that protects our internal organs. It doesn't "absorb" in the the way the marketeers describe.

Given that, there are wonderful ingredients that do indeed assist in improving the cutaneous layer. For people with very dry skin, I highly recommend looking for products that contain squalene. Someone above mentioned that they use a "Fruit of the Earth" product - most of their lotions and cream contain squalene. On a chemical level, squalene comes the closest to mimicking sebum.

My philosophy is if you find a product or ritual that works for you, keep at it. I just get miffed with the deliberate lies that cosmetic companies pass off as truth.

81. I use Vaseline on my face in winter
as well as all over my body. My skin dries out like it's nobody's business in winter & the since the main ingredient in most of the "dry skin" lotions is vaseline, well, I just choose to go straight to the source.

At bedtime, slather it on your hands & feet, then slip white socks & gloves on. Body heat + vaseline = nice soft skin in the morning.

If I use it on my hands or feet, I then rub what's left on my hands on my face. Otherwise, like you, I get break outs. :)

84. I love the sun. I love being warm, swimming in the ocean, the whole nine yards.
And up to the time I was in my mid-40s, I never saw any bad effects from it. Now, however, I gotta say it's probably helped break down the collagen in my skin.

Dr Oz is right: he says we need the sun for Vitamin D, but be sure to always use sunscreen on your face and the backs of your hands. A bit of exposure elsewhere won't hurt, unless you are very, very fair.

I'm Ashkenazi Russian Jewish, so I'm dead white! But my people also very long-lived and healthy. I've been a vegetarian for 33 years, and I'm the antithesis of a princess, I like jeans, flat shoes, I'm a runner so I have low-maintenance hair, and I use Vaseline Creamy as my face moisturizer.

But I have yo-yo dieted in my life and ladies, that plays HELL with your face and body! Gaining and losing weight will mess you up! I've finally got it right, but my advice is don't do it!! As you get older, that extra fat will keep your face young.

Barbara Cartland said when a woman turns fifty, she has to make a choice between keeping her face or her figure. She chose her face. I chose my figure, but the gravity pulls it down every day. At 54, I won't complain, though because I feel so great physically. No Pharma for me!

86. Every morning I wake up
Look in the mirror and I think I'm alive, and I'm healthy and I have attitude. (I do too)

What I actually look like doesn't matter, since I'm satisfied with it. (No, really I am)

Let's see, tips or secrets-- tea tree oil in a mist as a toner cuts down on bad skin bacteria and adds a nice glow. I love the stuff. Oh, and exercise, a good sweaty walk or run, preferably somewhere beautiful. Regular work out with light weights (for most women; I do a bit heavier) Good posture (shows off the attitude better than fashion) Walk like you own the place. Good hydration and good nutrition. The occational chocolate. Wonderful sleep. Great sex.

I don't do make up, other than a little lip gloss or color. Don't need it. That funny isn't it? The older I got, the less and less make up I found useful or attractive until I stopped using it. Rarely these day I'll buy something, try it and think, yuk, not for me.

95. I used to get grief for having racoon eyes from avoiding the sun
I always wore big dark glasses and a visor or hat at the beach. I'd end up with big white circles around my eyes, and the rest of me tanned dark brown (not a good thing for an Irish girl).

So now the skin on my neck and chest is all splotchy, freckled and tough, but I have a lot fewer wrinkles on my face than the friends who used to mock the sunglasses and hat.

Also, I never use soap - I've been a Cetaphil fan for many years (the main ingredient is glycerine).

100. what -- are you kidding? i think you forgot the sarcasm tag in your post, amirite?
there are no beauty secrets, i wore sunscreen since age 12 -- it doesn't work unless you have the genetics, in other words, it doesn't work but some people are fooled into believing it does i suppose

the telltale is the bit about how you can't wear makeup around your eyes any more, wow, what's your first clue it didn't work? yah you have wrinkles like everybody else our age -- SUNSCREEN didn't work, it keeps you from getting burned that day, that's it, long term, look at your chest where you wore sunscreen but no make-up and look at your face where you wore sunscreen PLUS make-up and yah the spots on your chest tell it right there -- sunscreen don't work

there are no beauty secrets other than pick your parents well and pick your surgeon well

i did a shitty job with part a and will now try to do better with part b

as far as the lady who said, she stayed out of the sun, fine, i'd rather be ugly if the option is to give up my whole life, i'm gonna be an outsdoorwoman and explore and climb mountains and all that good happy crappy...at some point maybe you have to choose between having a life and being a great beauty

how many great beauties in their fifties do you wish you had their life and their adventures? yah, me neither

maybe the best beauty secret is, if you're over 30 and you leave a good looking corpse when you go you missed out on life...
