Not to be confused with the online streaming video, DiVX discs were sold at Circuit City and could only play on specially equipped players. The discs were about $4 each, and the gimmick was when you put them in the player, a 48-hour clock began running during which you could watch it as often as you wanted. After that period, you had to pay again or upgrade or whatever.
It was promised that the discs would be sold in drugstores, groceries, other retailers, etc. Of course that never happened, and after a few months, they announced that they were dumping the format and purchased discs would stop working at all after about 90 days.
I bring it up because I'm doing spring cleaning and found probably 200 of these discs that I'd bought that I'm just going to trash. I didn't trash them because I figured someone might actually find a way to play them again on a computer or DVD player.
Ironic that RedBox is sort of offering the same service idea, but a lot cheaper and playable on any DVD player.
*Anybody want the discs? You can have them for whatever it costs me to ship them to you! Must hear from you by Tuesday (trash day)...
