Poll question: Star Trek
I just picked up the REMASTERED editions of The Original Series (TOS) for $49 each season.

While the originals, dated f/x and all, are great, the new visuals only serve to enhance the original ideas the visuals were to represent. As such, like other franchises that updated their f/x, TOS's effects are actually worthwhile.

But that's my two cents.

Do you prefer the original f/x, the updated f/x, or did you ever care for WiLLIam ShATnER?

2. William Shatner is ham... but patrick Stewart is cheesy with his maudlin undertones...
Kirk: "If YOU don't stOP doING THis! YOU will be seen AS war-LIKE."

Picard: "My mission. is to. determine. if. we. should start. a war. Or. perhaps. stop. one."

Really, sit through TNG - Picard constantly snorts valium or something, I swear...

4. Wait a minute
Kirk: "If YOU don't stOP doING THis! YOU will be seen AS war-LIKE."

Picard: "My mission. is to. determine. if. we. should start. a war. Or. perhaps. stop. one."

I thought it was Shatner and not Stewart who had the reputation for inserting random unnecessary pauses into his lines? I swear, if Shatner could have inserted a dramatic pause into "Khaaaaaaaan!" he would have done so. "Khaaaaaaa! :beat: Ahhhhhhh! :beat: Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!"

22. Old-timey Trek can be embarrassingly bad.
Hammy acting, and ham-fisted writing. I can hardly bear to watch entire episodes now. Here and there, though, it sang, and it remains indelible.

The later series are much better TV, but they didn't break ground the way Roddenberry's original did.

6. Original. To me there is no other. I love
Shatner. Such a ham. I would buy a DVD of his cheesy commercials if I found one.

9. Can you see Sisko hiding in the background of the remastered Tribbles episode?
If not then I will NOT spend the $49!

10. I've liked most of the remastered.
Doomsday Machine was great because the original had Kirk flying the Constellation into the maw of the machine at the end and I swear they used a $3.00 Enterprise model kit they sold way back when for those shots. It was laughably bad and just ruined the episode.

Ultimate Computer I though would be great with the battle between the M-5 controlled Enterprise and the 4 war games ships but I thought the FX were not all that better than the original.

11. LOL - I've been watching "The Ultimate Computer" (fantastic episode!) and have been
loving the new f/x...

Haven't gotten to the haywire-M5-blasts-the-war-fleet bit toward the end yet, but so far the updates do the episode justice.

Except the theme; the woman doing the singing voice-over strikes me the wrong way and the Timpani (kettle drum) is briefly hit and then ignored, it's like the orchestra had an episode of ADD or something...

Still, all in all, worth their effort... but not for $100 per season... :D

Youtube has f/x clips from all 79 episodes as well as that promo piece...

And having finished "The Ultimate Computer", I too am now on the side of "remastered".

20. Wow, that's pretty cool. I think I'll pick those up.
My wife has the original stuff on VHS (her father's back in the day) and they are getting pretty worn. I think I'll go for the re-mastered for replacements.

14. I know it helps today's audiences' more sophisticated eye for SFX, but for me....
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 07:04 PM by Bucky
the cheesy effects never bothered me... it was more stage-theatrical then; you willingly suspended your disbelief because you wanted to get the story. The remastered shows are too much like the colorization of Hollywood classics, if not as bad as the masturbatory digital 'improvements' done for the real Star Wars trilogy.

Someday they're gonna go back and put TOS to smell-o-vision or digitally add forehead ridges to the 1960s Klingons. On that day, they will have gone too far.

16. They never bothered me either, actually... to me it's about writing and character creativity...
f/x are the icing on the cake.

But unlike Star Wars and the ilk, which were just tarted up, "Trek" TOS's writing always had the depth that they couldn't fully realize at the time. The new effects really do enhance what are top notch stories to begin with. :)

LOL about "smell-o-vision", :spray:

Oh, I will ALWAYS loathe "colorization". Even with today's technology, it can still be spotted from a mile away... (whites lack a comparable color cast, amongst other small but incontrovertible discrepancies...)

19. Remastered for me.
I originally watched Star Trek when it was first broadcast on a black & white telly with rabbit ears. Out of curiosity, I picked up a DVD from the library, but the image quality was bad. I do like the remastered version much better.

or $56 for one season

23. I've seen the remasters as well, and I prefer them to the originals.
It was just hard to take the original episodes very seriously when you saw phaser beams that looked like someone used a magic marker.

The remasters both look better and are very tastefully done - unlike, say, Star Wars.
