Don't know what I expected but this seems excessive. I thought it would be a good idea to keep up to date but I'll take my chances on getting lost.

1. I've been told updating my Prius' GPS DVD would run to nearly US$300.
Not happening.

3. Buy a GPS from Best Buy
You can get a decent one for around 100 bucks and the update might cost around $100 but its for the lifetime of the device.

4. it varies...
Garmin wants a lot of money for an update, I think close to $200 IIRC, although the first one is free...

5. I have a garmin
A nuvi 260w the map update cost 110 for lifetime update or 60 for a one time update. My map was 2 years out of date so it kept getting confused whenever I was around new highway construction. Seems to be fixed now.

6. I get free updates
Every time I pull into a rest stop, I check to see if a new free revision of the state highway map is available.

10. Not really
Every state I've driven through gives them out free at rest stops, so if I haven't been in the state for a while, I always stop at the first one and grab a free map. Why pay for them when your tax dollars are printing them already? And, seriously, who is going to know better about what roads are where than the entity that built them in the first place?

8. Paper maps are still my fall back.
I usually pick up a few from AAA every few years for the states I typically travel through.

11. I have decided that Rand McNally is my best update. Nuts on
this Honda update. I can buy a Garmin or other GPS for less than $100.00 or a map for about $5.00. No contest.

About $40 for the Key Map book :D

14. You can buy a whole atlas at Pilot stores for about three bucks
They have the Rand McNally atlas regular people buy for $2.99, the paper-bound motor carrier one for $5.99, the spiral bound laminated one for $19.95 and the large print one for $39.95. I get mine at Pilot (because I get my fuel there, and I'm already in the store) but Love's, TA and Petro should be the same price. You can't beat a truck stop for pricing on road atlases.

15. Sometimes they come in handy, though
If you do a LOT of driving, and you go to really weird fucking places, they are good things to have.

16. Perhaps, but they aren't worth the cost
You can buy an external system for a fraction of the cost and keep it updated for a fraction of the cost. You can also move it to your other vehicles and rental cars, etc. So long as the auto manufacturer controls the software and database updates, you're going to get bent over.
