In America, My Family Who Has Worked Their Entire Lives Just Hit Rock Bottom!!!
For those of you who may not know, I would like to start off by introducing myself. My name is Corey Baker, I am 19 years old and I am from a small community in Eastern Ohio that has been hit drastically by the economic downturn. I have been a member of DU since, I believe, 2004 during the primaries when I was just a young 14 year old kid enthusiastic about the political process and a strong believer in the principles of the Democratic Party.

We have all shared our good times and bad times here at DU, to me it is almost like a gathering of family here. We have been through fierce debates, shared great defeats, shared joyous occasions, and even had our own personal tragedies. To me DU is a place where we can all come together as one even though we may have differences in opinions, we all share a common belief that even in the roughest of times we can pick ourselves up because we believe in the Democratic Principles.

I would like to share with all of you that I have always been a strong, good willed individual. I have held a job since the age of 14 and I have worked with the promise that if you work hard and play by the rules your tomorrows will always be better than yesterdays. I believe this with all of my heart, yet over the course of the past week my life has really hit rock bottom. My parents who have worked hard their entire lives in factories and driving trucks are the greatest parents I could ever ask for, I love them more than they will ever imagine. Yet heartbreakingly enough, this week my father lost his factory job which paid a mere $8 an hour. My Mother recently got news that within the next month her position at her factory would be cut due to downsizing their workforce in order to save money.

Every week I un-hesitantly give them my paycheck, which isn't much, to help cover the cost of the bills in our home that we rent. Unfortunately with the loss of my dads job and the imminent loss of my mom's job we are losing everything. We received an eviction notice today stating we had 30 days to find a new place to live. Our current home has not had gas turned on in months, forcing us to boil water on the stove to take baths, and with winter fast approaching, if we should be so lucky enough to stay in our home, it is going to be another winter of hardship without heat in the house.

I am amazed that this is happening to us in America, the richest country on the face of the earth where the top 1% has more wealth than the bottom 95% combined. (I think those figures are right) It amazes me that in my short life through all the struggles we have endured that now of all times we are losing everything.

I understand that I am only 1 of so many millions of Americans facing these tough challenges to say the least. I am sure that these sentiments are the stories of millions of working families just like mine, who don't just happen to be down on their luck, but happen to be at rock bottom.

I am not asking for your sympathy, I am not asking for your money, I am sharing with you my story of a family on the absolute brink of losing everything. This is the America that we live in right now, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and finally the poor hit rock bottom and lose everything!

I am asking that if there is anyone out there with the absolute ability and means to help my family in anyways possible it would be greatly appreciated. I don't mean for this to come off as a solicitation of any sorts, these are the words of an individual who is watching his family who have worked hard their entire lives lose everything. These are the words of a 19 year old who is completely heartbroken that his life and the life of his family is hitting absolute rock bottom.

Thank-You for Letting me vent and if by the grace of god anyone can offer help or advice feel free to PM me!!!
Please Send Good Vibes!!! :hi:

Thank-You

Corey A Baker

Corey, I've read your earlier posts. You're a great kid & your parents did a wonderful job with you. Hope some good comes out of a very difficult situation.
