Popsicle Man!
(Thanks for reminding me CalPeg.)

The Popsicle Man came through our neighborhood every day but Sunday in the summer.
He pedaled a 3 wheel vehicle.
Two wheels in the front and one in the back.
The cooler box was full of Popsicles and 'dry ice'.
We'd beg a piece of dry ice to make witches potions with.
We'd marvel at the 'smoke' it made in a cup of water.

The Popsicles were usually just the fruit flavored kind, double barreled, two sticks.
Theoretically you could break them apart and share half with your buddy or your little sister.
I don't remember that anyone ever did that.
:-)

I don't think he had a bell or anything.
He just hollered "POPSICLE MAN!"
You could usually hear him the block before yours.
MOM! CAN I HAVE A DIME (Nickel? I don't remember.) FOR A POPSICLE?
The answer was usually "yes".
Heaven on a hot summer day.

The Popsicle Man was always a black youth.
In an all white neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama in the 40s.
When I was 6 or 7 I thought being the Popsicle Man was probably the greatest job in the world.
I wonder how much he made?

3. We always had to split the Popsicles and share...
unless we scrounged the neighborhood and found a few returnables -- then we could buy and eat a WHOLE one each without telling our mother.

Didn't have a Popsicle Man or an ice cream truck going through our neighborhood though. I only saw the latter on TV. We did have a single guy who filled and distributed ice cream cones from his front porch every Saturday in the summer. They were free and first come, first served. He had no family around and it made him happy to see the smiles on the kids' faces. My mother wouldn't allow us to go but for many of my friends it was the highlight of the week.

BTW, Popsicles cost a nickel when I was a kid in a later decade so you probably weren't paying a dime in the 40s.. if you were, maybe Popsicle Man WOULD have been a good career choice.;-)
