Give us your car history. What have you had and how long?
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 10:56 AM by charlie and algernon
I'm still giddy from getting a new car yesterday. Tell us what you've had and how long you had it.

2006 Ford Fusion SE - I've had it a little over 12 hours :D

1997 Chrysler Cirrus LX - 2002-2009

1991 Subaru Legacy - 2000-2002 (I loved that car and was heartbroken when I wrecked it in an ice storm)

1. Nice toy. Congrats!
We keep our (foreign) cars longer...

I am still driving a 1998 Toyota Camry, the previous one was a 1986 Camry and before that 1980 Ford Mustang.

The other car now is a 2007 Toyota Highlander, before that 1993 Volvo and before that 1982 Volvo.

4. Thanks!
Oh I'm certain I could've had that Subaru at least through 2004 or 5. I probably could've had the Cirrus had I not driven so much in stop and go conditions, I think that was what killed it.

2. Is that their new hybrid?
Nice!

1984 - 1991 Oldsmobile Omega I bought this car with my mom. She paid the down payment, I did the payments and the insurance.

1991 - 1995 Geo Prizm The only fire engine red car I'll ever own. Fun little car.

1995 - 1996 Ford Topaz. A POS that my ex bought with a very shitty financing deal. We were breaking up so I let him keep it.

1996 - 2006 Chevy van G20 - It was my mother's. I stared driving it while she was sick and continued to drive it until 2006 when it hit 135K. Still have it and looking to sell it.

2006 - Present 2002 Honda CRV w/ 4WD. I hope to keep it for 10 years too.

8. nope, it's their version of the Mazda 6 and Camry.
I really really like it, nice bit of power and good handling. Plus it looks AWSOME in black!

I like the CR-V, they get really good mileage and drive real nice.

3. I've owned ten cars, but only two in the last 13 years
My current ride is a 2002 Chevy S-10 pick-up. I've owned it for 4.5 years. It's about to turn over 100,000 miles and I've had very little trouble with it. I bought it when it had about 31,000 miles on it. I've replaced the front shocks, the battery, and I had a minor problem with the cooling system. That's it besides regular maintenance. I think Chevy stopped making the S-10 in 2003 and introduced their new small pick-up, the Colorado. I really like my truck and I'll keep it until the cost of repairs overcomes the value of it.

The vehicle I owned before that was also a small pick-up; a 1989 Isuzu. I bought it in 1996 and drove it for 9 years. It died a natural death- blown head gasket. It was going to cost $1500 to fix it and the truck was worth $500 in roadworthy condition. I didn't have much trouble out of it, either. No major problems until the head gasket gave way.

The rest of my vehicles were clunkers. I spent more time working on them than driving them.

9. that's what doomed the Cirrus
it's repairs were starting to equal and exceed the total car worth. I ended up getting $500 for it and I've easily put $1,400 in repairs in it in the last few years. I hope the Fusion can last me till at least 2016.

5. Okay, here goes:
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 11:17 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
(All photos are representative of my car but not the exact car)

1. 1986 Ford Escort Wagon (May 1996-May 1997):

Inherited it from my sister with many miles and wear on it. Only good for local driving as the engine flooded easily and the power steering was shot.

2. 1994 Dodge Shadow (May 1997-April 2002)

Still the best and most favorite car I ever had. Drove it through college with very few problems. Put over 100,000 miles on it after buying it with 40,000. Sadly, it was totaled in my only major car accident but protected me well.

3. 1996 Plymouth Neon (April 2002-August 2004)

Not as good as the Shadow, but still a fun and enjoyable little car. Put over 60,000 miles on it.

4. 2000 Mazda 626 (August 2004-October 2005)

http://image.motortrend.com/f/roadtests/sedan/8511150+pheader/112_9903_01l+1999_mazda_626_lx_v6+front_side_view.jpg

Probably my best looking car, with leather interior and nice features. But also one of the most disappointing--the transmission went at only 50,000 miles.

5. 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer (October 2005-March 2007)

The first car I bought new, bought in a hurry after my 626 died. Actually a nice little car--I just wish I was able to enjoy it more, but was conned out of it by my wife. The only downside--it was peppy, too peppy. The only two speeding tickets I ever got in the past 10 years were in this car. No cruise control, either.

6. 2004 Toyota Corolla (March 2007-September 2009)

Inherited this from my wife, after she bought herself a new RAV 4 and convinced me to trade in the Lancer instead of this. Meh--I never cared much for this car. Don't get me wrong, it worked fine and got good mileage (which is why I had no problem selling it to my sister). It was just so incredibly boring and soulless. I had less emotional attachment to this car than to any other.

7. 2010 Toyota Matrix (September 2009-present)

My newest purchase, and only the second car I've bought new. Currently has all of 650 miles on it. Ironically this is essentially a Corolla wagon, but I like it so much more than my former Corolla based on its appearance, color, features and handling. I'll cross my fingers that I'll have this one for a while.

10. congrats on the new ride, that black will need a California Duster daily though!!

and I have things to do this week, so listing all my cars ain't gonna happen

but my first car was a year older than me, a '54 Chevy BelAire

i've had a 62, 64 and a 69 Chevy, a couple Fords, a couple Chryslers and once a 59 Lincoln with suicide doors.

I've had a couple Caddy's and another Lincoln from '89

several trucks, the best one was the '91 Mazda, but add in about 6 Chevys too

right now I'm driving the SUV we bought for the biz, a 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada. It's a nice rig with almost 100k miles, gets 22 MPG with all the bells and whistles and it's paid for so I plan to keep it until the electric cars are out

my family's total combined mileage on our volvos tops one million.

the odometer has been broken on mine for sometime, but i know that i've topped 300k.

my dad has had his 88 740 for about 13 or 14 years and you'd never know that it has around 425k on it.

my sister's been in her 89 740 for five or six years and she just rolled over 300k.

Four speed, about 0 to 60 in just under 10 seconds. Not great by today standards, but it held the road wonderfully and was easy, fun and comfortable to drive without power steering or brakes. I miss it to this day.

21. My first car was a 1988 VW Fox Wagon
like this one, only in slate-blue

I'd still be driving it today if I hadn't wrecked it in 1998. It was one tough car.

My mechanic bought my wreck and sold me a 1988 VW Jetta for $3000. I think I ended up spending at least as much in repairs over the next 6 years, so it wasn't much of a bargain, though the body was still in good condition.

When that car died in 2004, we bought a 2004 Honda Civic:

(Leaves are stuck to it because I took that picture the morning after Ike last year...)

And last Spring, I paid it off and own it outright now! :D

27. 1997 Saturn SW1 until this summer, then 2000 Subaru Forester S
I wrecked the Saturn and needed a car of similar size ASAP. Unfortunately Saturn quit making the wagons in 2004 (and by all accounts the last few years were crap) and I wasn't entirely enamored of my other choices for wagons. The Subie's a teeny bit bigger and gets similar mileage because I have the 5 spd, so I'm pretty happy with it so far. It's a bit taller than my Saturn was, and it's amazing how much more spacious that makes it feel. The ride feels a bit stiff and truck-like, which takes some getting used to, and it's not really laid out well for short people, I feel like the seat isn't quite far enough forward when I put the clutch in. But that's fairly minor and I can probably adjust things more to my liking if I sit down and figure it all out, the pedals probably adjust.

28. Best car--Volvo, worst---Audi. We have had lots of cars over the years,
Vans for business, a car for personal. All vans were Chevy and racked up over 200,000 miles on each. All sold by us in good condition for new ones(used) with low mileage.
For personal, we loved the Volvo although it was expensive to repair. Had a VW Squareback that was a nice small car but the heater was awful. We had to scrape the ice off the inside windows in the winter. The heater was terrible. Other than that, the car was great. The Audi spent more time in the garage than any other car we had in 40 years. Never again.

Two more VW's along the way were OK, nothing to brag about. The easiest car to drive was my first car. You guessed it, a Corvair. Avocado green. Comfortable, no problems at all. We put ton of miles on that car and always wondered about Ralph Nader's crucification of the car.

1988-1996 1966 Ford Mustang coupe, 289 V-8, three on the floor, w/ factory a/c Loved that car, but it had a lot of problems

1995- present 1972 Chevrolet c-10 custom deluxe fleetside pick-up. got me through college with very little fuss, still have it to this day!

2007- present 1987 Chrysler Conquest. A 2.6L turbocharged heathen that im presently restoring (known in europe as the mitsubishi Starion) Kind of a rare car.

2003- present 1995 Chevrolet G20 cargo van. A former Airborne Express delivery van, which is now somewhat of a sleeper hot rod. ripped out the wheezing v-6 and gave it a warmed up 4 bolt main 350 v-8.

33. I can only attempt to put together my list that way.
Bought my first car at 15 (couldn't drive it), and that was a year old Mustang. Before I left high school, I had also owned a year old Z28 and my baby, blk/blk Corvette (built into a hot rod).

By the time I turned 21, I had also owned another Corvette (a Z51), a Bandit era Trans Am, my 87 Grand National, a Porsche 928S, and a convertible Mercedes 450SL.

Since then, I've owned two Mustang GT 'verts, a Grand Am, a Jaguar XJ6, a Protege PR5 and my current ride, my 07 Mazdaspeed 3.

I know I left a couple out somewhere in there.

Note: I guess a couple of these might seem new, but our history is: He got 423,000 miles out of his 1995(?) Honda CRX and I got 300,000 miles out of my 1995 Geo Tracker. We bury our cars when they're dead and not a second before. :)

festivals in various places except when it rains or snows, and a wind powered Mack truck with new rigging and new sails that I use to take wind powered trips to wind festivals in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.

Iowa?

I forgot Iowa.

I have a giant Chevy Tahoe with a flex fuel ethanol fitting and the ethanol is denatured with wind powered methanol generated from my direct carbon fuel cell.

Also I have a biodiesel powered asphalt truck that uses bio-asphalt to make my totally green highways, well not green exactly, but more a kind of black/brown, but well, you know what I mean...

39. A drive on Memory Road, eh?
'78-'82 '72 Chevy Nova, 4 door, white on blue. Inherited. Not a chick magnet for my college years. Sold to best friend for $50 and joined the army.

'83-'84 '83 Toyota Celica GTS. Chick magnet! Too late - married '82. Great, great car! Sold it when sent to Germany. Looked like this:

'85-'86 '85 Jeep CJ-7. 6 cyl. 5spd loaded out with all options. Fun drive in Germany! Gave to ex-wife in divorce. Still looking for another. CJ, that is. No use for wife.

'87-'89 '83 Mercury Lynx. POS threw a rod at 113k.

'89-90 '87 Hyundai. It was a car.

'99-'01 '91 VW Golf. Bought from guy I sold the Nova to, with 135k, took it to 186k. Fun, when it felt like running.

'01-'08 '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My longest owned vehicle. Huh! Gave it to my brother last Christmas. Still a daily driver at around 180k, I think. I'll be getting another Jeep.

Currently driving work rentals. Many, many over last two years. Including '06 or '07 Ford Fusion. Pretty good car. Handled well. I'm now in '09 Pontiac Torrent. It's OK.

40. Only one worth mentioning
My first car, '69 Barracuda. Slipped between gears, rode and handled like crap, had rust and body rot in the undercarriage.

Loved it!

44. I have never owned a car that was made
in the decade that I owned it! In the 80's I drove cars from the 60s and 70s (I miss my 68 baracuda that I had to give up in 91 the most!).
In the 90's I had cars from the 80s. Right now I have a 97 and a 94. Luckily my husband is good at working on cars!
I guess now that we are nearing the teen years of the 2000's I will be getting a car from this century soon!!!!!!!

45. okay
1985 in high school (one week): '74 AMC Gremlin. My grandfather sold it to me. It was unsafe to drive so I asked him to take it back.

1985-6: '71 Dodge Dart. Ran well to the end, but the rust did it in.

1986 (a few months): '68 Ford Falcon. Same thing, the rust did it in. Also, the muffler fell off and damaged the tank. My step monster basically manipulated me into buying it from his drinking buddy. This was my last car with triangular vent windows.

1986-91 in college: '78 Chevy Nova, 6 cyl. sedan. Had some quirks like the weak GM front springs, bad AC and perpetually leaking head gasket. My first car to use unleaded fuel and to be equipped with electronic ignition.

1991-4 in law school: '77 Nova coup. My sister essentially abondoned it when the flywheel broke. I had it fixed and drove it from MA to OH for law school.

1994-2002: '78 Nova sedan, low miles. It was a graduation present from my father. Again, the rust eventually did it in.

2002-2008: '02 VW Jetta station wagon, 4 cyl. We bought this to replace the Nova. It was really buggy and pricey to fix, but otherwise a nice car. This was my first car that was still in production when I bought it. It was wrecked in 2008 when a kid hit me from behind while I was waiting at a red light.

2008-present: '09 VW Jetta station wagon, 5-cyl. This was a big improvement over the '02 model and actually gets better gas mileage too.

46.  Ok.
1987 Ford Thunderbird (1998-2001) It had all manner of problems, but I still miss it today.

1992 Jeep Cherokee (2004-2005) Some asshat stole it and stripped it for parts.

1990 Buick Century (2004-2007) My wife's car, she nicknamed it "Dolly." All joking aside, it was a good car, and took a great deal of punishment.

1998 Chevy S-10 Pickup (2006-2009).

51. One More Parking Space
That's what I think to myself when I see the "One Less Car" t-shirt.

Hand me down Impalas:
'62 white convertible with power windows, 2 dr, but manual steering with a wheel that was as big as a Mack Truck's. Dad sold it for $50 to the rip off guy at the gas station.
'68 maroon 2-dr with black vinyl top. that was fun - got traded in on something lame
'72 light green 2 door. Hated it when dad bought it, hated it when I got it. I managed to destroy it quickly fortunately.

So, now I actually had to buy cars.

'75 Volvo 245 DL Wagon, Red. I loved that. Except for the no A/C part. Destroyed it on the George Washington Parkway on my way to my company's Xmas black tie dinner.
The FIL lent us his older Grand Wagoneer until we could buy something. It needed oil every day. Turned the thing into a planter a few weeks later during a cold snap.
'88? Honda Civic. purchased with my at-the-time spouse. Great little car
2000 Mitsu Montero Sport, still my daily driver. I love it. Not too big, and I can do anything with it.

(omitting the ex's 1990 Miata and 2000 328ci Bimmer)

53. Just three
1982 Honda Prelude, Summer 1988-December 1990. Fun-to-drive, got great gas mileage. I really loved that little car.

1991 Jeep Wrangler, January 1991-Present. My first new vehicle. It gets crappy gas mileage, but it'll run forever as long as I keep the fluids changed and perform some basic maintenance. The paint has seen better days, but I don't care, I still love it.

2001 Dodge Stratus R/T Coupe, November 2000-June 2009. Bought it because it was sporty, got better mileage than the Jeep, and reminded me of the Prelude. A tree limb fell on it during a tornado, though, and totaled it. Good thing I never got rid of the Jeep!

55. hmmm
1970 Plymouth Satellite - 1977-1978
1978 Ford Thunderbird - 1978-1983
1983 VW Rabbit Diesel - 1983-1989
1989 Isuzu Amigo - 1989-1991
1983 Mercury Cougar - 1991-2001
1989 Ford Taurus - 2001-2004
2003 Ford Taurus - 2004-Present

The Amigo was fun to drive but I liked the VW the best.

I don't know what I would get next. My current car has been a money pit this year.
I like the New Beetle only because I always wanted a Beetle. I like the looks of the Fusion.
