Ahhh todays youth...GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
Anyway. LOL, I'm perplexed by my significant others son. He's a smart guy, 23, but he's going through that phase of, "the world sucks, money is evil, I'm a slacker but don't call me one, I have a college education, but I don't want to use my degree to better myself, I hate all things material, I hate people, I hate consumerism,I hate the government, alex jones is god, etc" you get the idea.

Well, he constantly complains about the evils of consumerism, going through his libertarianism stage of ignorance and how technology is destroying us all, yet YET he is massively addicted to texting on his cell and when I call him on it, he mumbles something along the lines of "how will people get in touch with me?" (a little self absorbed, huh?). I just say, I don't text, I rarely if ever answer my cell and sometimes I don't even carry it with me. If someone wants to find me, they will.

He just gives me the slacker response of "whatever" and goes back to texting.

so my questions is, WTF?

Hell, I was a hardcore punk back in the late 70's and 80's and I had that, I'm pissed at the world, fuck you all, I hate reagan, etc." attitude, but damn.

Okay, I know, I'm middle aged now and I just "don't get kids today", and I'm probably just hot airing my confusion but to me, and it's just me, he's 23 and I feel he's way to old for this crap, but that's just me. I respect my GF and have not interfered, but I have voiced my opinions that he needs to desperately grow up.

I just needed to get this out of my system. Thanks for the miffed rants. LOL

1. I'm 27, and this guy doesn't impress me either.
(Though by his age I was already married, working and paying rent.)

I live in Austin and as great a city as this is, there is a gigantic slacker element here. As if as it's almost encouraged.

fortunately he doesn't live with us. He finally got his own place. He does have a job, but nothing noteworthy.

Beyond all my complaining about him, he is basically a good kid but not in the least motivated about anything at all.

He has a degree in environmental studies, a pretty hot field right now, but does nothing to pursue a job in that field.

Drives me nuts. My GF and his dad are just very laid back and have given him just about anything he wanted growing up (that's a massive problem to me). Christ they still even pay some of his bills. That blew me away. I can't demand anything but I did strongly suggest that they cut him off and let him fed for himself, that will be the biggest motivator to him getting a job in his field.

One would think that maybe he's hanging around with a bunch of losers, but he's the odd man out, his friends are all pursuing their fields of study and are moving on.

His older sister, has her act together, living on her own in San Fran and working as a chef.

I just don't get it.

2. Reminds me of a recent Bloom County rerun.
Opus is driving with Milo & Binkley in the car. He's on a rant about not killing animals and then they decide they are hungry. Milo asks who wants what and Opus says "McNuggets".

It is hard to have firm convictions without being a hypocrite in some way.

4. Ah yes, the early 20s dickwad phase
In some ways worse than the late-teens dickwad phase, because the dickwad has more freedom and more money.

I remember being a bit of a loudmouth ass at that age too. And a friend of mine has experienced it with her son just recently; after many years of his being kind, polite, courteous, and thoughtful, he's now massively rude to her, and she's shocked by it.

He'll sort it all out and come out better in the end. Patience, grasshopper. And if it makes you feel any better, keep the ball that those kids booted into your yard. :hi:

5. LOL you hit on the head. LOL
the dickwad phase. That sums it up.

we were just on a family reunion type of vacation and he was acting like a total ass.

Finally after one of his many dramatic displays during that vacation, I finally turned to my GF and said, your son has turned into a dick. She agreed with me. LOL

6. About five years ago I was dropping off a package at FedEx
and a 20-something guy wearing an inexpensive-looking suit came in looking for his lost cell phone. At first he calmly asked the clerk whether one had been found but when she said no he started ranting that the cell phone was his life and he really had to find it right now and on and on in a repetitive and ever more frantic loop.

The clerk behind the counter never took her eyes off him and had one hand on the phone. He finally stormed out ranting. It was pretty sad.
