My Aunt passed away last night.
She was 86 years of age. She took her afternoon nap on Sunday and didn't wake up. She quietly stopped breathing at approximately 8pm (PST), with her sister (my mother in law) at her side.

She has been living with us for these past 4 years. Diabetic, with failing vision and memory, and increasingly frail, her body could no longer take the strain of staying alive.

One day, while reading, she noticed a picture of a plane in the book (on the Battle of Midway)... and told me how, during the war, she worked on 'planes like that'... It turns out she worked in the plant manufacturing Douglas SBD Dauntless in Southern California.

Her husband passed away six years ago. She had no children of her own, but she was aunt to 6 (that I know of) and great aunt to 14.

She will be missed.

1. I'm sorry, Hawk.
That must be tough for you. That's cool, though, about her being a 'Rosie The Riveter' in WWII. Good for her. She helped win the war. My condolences, buddy.

5. But that's the way to go, IMO.
If you have to go, and we all do, I can't think of a better way.

It's good she was with family like you.

13. Hear hear! (nt)
A gentle, kind epilogue to what seems to have been an eventful, fully-lived life. Here's to your aunt. R.I.P.

Sounds like she lived a long, full life, though--that's the way to go, and to be remembered.

11. My condolances, HH.
I got a chance to visit with a great aunt the other day. She's 93. Sharp as a tack, but only weighs about 58 pounds. So much knowledge and history the older folks know and have been a part of...I wish we could keep them around forever.

12. I'm sorry you lost your aunt.
How absolutely wonderful, however, that she passed away, at home, and in her sleep.

It is the ONLY way I want to go - my sympathies to your family.

14. So very sorry, HH...(My parents met at Douglas in WWII)...
It's a blessing for her that she simply "let go" in her sleep, but I know it's hard for those who miss her.

I'm sending you and your family all good thoughts during this sad and difficult time.

As a side note, in 1943, my dad was in the Army Air Corps and after OCS got stationed in the difficult theater of Santa Monica, at Douglas Aircraft. My mom also worked at Douglas, locating housing for servicemen. My dad took a shine to her, and used to buzz her office quonset hut in his AT-6.

Douglas also had another plant down in Long Beach, I believe -- not sure where the SBD was actually assembled. But my sincere thanks to your aunt for doing her part during WWII.

20. So sorry to hear about your Aunt, HH...
I'm glad she went so peacefully and at home with the family that loved her.

Gals like her -- the ones who went to the factories during WWII and helped change things for women -- have always been such an inspiration for me. When I work with my tools building things, I always feel so competent and empowered -- I can't help but think that's what ladies like your Aunt felt like back then.

Here's to your Aunt! :toast:
