I'm 36 and I like The Sounds
I also like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Wild Light, Stellastarr*, My Chemical Romance, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, AFI.... basically a lot of music made by people 10 to 15 years younger than me.

Anybody else like that or am I a weirdo? A lot of people my age listen to classic rock and 80s pop. I just like listening to new music. I've already heard all of that other stuff a million times. I would feel very out of place, probably, if I were to go to a show by, say, Rise Against and be the only one there old enough to buy beer. I might be pretty popular, though. :D

1. My dear Tobin!
Well, that's cool!

I have never heard of any of those groups...But I'm probably about your mom's age, lol!

You like what you like and I don't think it's weird at all...

:hi:

3. Hi Peggy
There are probably some 35 year old people out there right now who have never heard of those bands either. :) One of my sisters, who is two years younger than me, throws parties every once in a while and invites me. The beer gets flowing and pretty soon we're listening to Hank Williams Jr. and The Eagles. I then suggest some new music and nobody there has ever heard of it and votes it down.

What they seem to be doing is trying to relive all those parties from a decade ago, when they seemed more fun. I don't know how drinking until you puke ever got to be fun, and I sure as hell don't want to do it now. It seems like The Eagles have been played at every one of her parties since I was 20 years old.

2. I'm 39 and i like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spoon, Muse, and random cool songs from other "youth" bands.
Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 02:11 AM by Quantess
I'm somewhat an audiophile, (although I don't appreciate classical music as much as I am supposed to), am lucky enough to have had older siblings with cool vinyl, and I have dated musicians and befriended female musicians. I've seen Nirvana multiple times, though, and saw the White Stripes back in 2000 or 2001, in a small venue.

But then, I also know the fashion trends of younger people. I've been selling my clothes to the youth-marketed retail shops such as Buffalo Exchange, more successfully than when I was in my 20s. What does that say about me? I don't know if it's good or bad.

Edit: I'm still 38.

4. Well if business is good, I wouldn't worry about it, too much :)
You just have a better handle on what's cool now days. :D

Do you have a birthday coming up soon? I turn 37 on 10/4.

8. You're a Libra, I'm a Scorpio.
:hi:

I think it's healthy to be more on the cutting edge, than to be stuck in the past. It means you are accepting of the future and welcome change.
However, I really love vintage rock as well. Whatever I happen to like, I like. I get bored of the same old sounds, or anything too predictable, or contrived, or corny.

5. nah, not that weird. and i already went to shows like that and bought beer.
you should do the same. life's too short to worry about how people will think of you.

i don't like all new music, but then i don't like all older music either. i like what i like and i have no shame about it (though i can discuss and debate aesthetics beyond the generic clap trap "it's just my opinion, man, just leave me alone!").

i think Muse is absolutely amazing, and i've been dying for a band like that to carry the torch of what sounds like a mix of Suede, Soundgarden, and the irreverence of B-52's/Queens of the Stone Age.

ps: you're a weirdo. just get used to it and then everything will be fine and you won't fear being different in public.

7. More power to you.

I say, appreciate what sounds good to you. I like some music from the groups you mentioned myself and I'm in my 40's.

10. It's from Spoon's 2001 album "Girls Can Tell"
Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 02:44 AM by AllenVanAllen

It's not very new but I still dig it.

I feel the same way. :hi:

11. Spoon is so cool. So innovative. They will be seen like maybe Roxy Music.
Of course, I'm referring to "Country Life" and to the first Roxy Music album, when Brian Eno was an influence.

12. If you're weird, so am I
I'm only a few years younger than you, and I listen to music produced by people my age and younger. I had way more than my fill of 80's pop and hair metal when I was a kid. They're not something I'm interested in listening to now.

The lead singer of one of my current favorite bands, the Fleet Foxes, is almost 11 years younger than me.

If it makes you feel any better, the lead singer of Muse is 31.

14. Most of the new music sounds pre-manufactured and with little effort as possible.
Layered music is a thing of the past when only a handful of beeps and buzzes will do.

Even the 1962 Beatles mush-fest, "From Me To You", has more depth. (Perish that thought, I know...)

15. I'm 41 & I like the Sounds. Don't like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs though.
I also like Vampire Weekend. Something about them reminds me of Haircut 100.

16. Not weird at all
I like a lot of pop done by younger females when I'm a 33-year-old male. I call stuff like Hey Monday good pop, not just for teens.

17. I'm 57 and I like John Mayer.
I got tired of worrying about what people think of my musical taste years ago. Now I just listen to what I like.
