3. I grew up where those critters were quite fruitful
I hated those bugs, they left their skins all over the trees and I was always afraid one would land in my hair. I had friends who would catch them, tie a string to them and voila, a free flying pet :)

6. We had our cicada's here five years ago. I think what you are hearing
are either crickets (not to quote cboy) or katydids (sp).

Or a combination of the two. Typical of late summer.

8. Nope they are cicadas
The ones you are thinking of were the 17 year cicadas but there ate other species of cicadas here. I think there is a seven year type. I know what crickets and katydids sound like.. These are definitely cicadas.

7. I had to take one away from my cat Riff Raff today (cicada is fine)
Riff Raff is outraged because, well, a cicada is a perfect cat toy - he's been hollering about it all evening. It's bad when you find yourself screaming, "SHUT THE FUCK UP, I LET THE FUCKING BUG GO" :o

11. ooh the lizards
I'm watching TV and see Riff Raff hop through the open window with some kind of tail in his mouth....I chase him under the bed and end up slamming a book on the ground to make him drop a quite sizeable lizard, which I then had to catch. I waved the lizard angrily at Riff Raff shouting DO NOT BRING YOUR LITTLE FUCKING FRIENDS IN HERE! I know I sound like a crazy lady. :o

14. love those sounds - they are the sounds of summer
we had a German house-mate back when and she was shocked by those sounds - I guess they didn't have cicadas and crickets at her latitude...

16. They always begin here in our area somewhere around the 4th of July.
As summer comes to an end they seem to get louder. They were so loud in the early evening yesterday that we could barely hear each other talking on the porch.

18. That buzzing is the sound of summer in Phoenix.
We have cicadas every summer. They start up with the monsoon in July and go out with the end of the monsoon in Sept.
