I've never asked for good vibes or special thoughts but today brought me to my knees
My Dogter Piglet has been ill for the last three weeks. Spiking a fever every day, lethargic, not eating, not wanting to walk. She's been on antibiotics and pain/fever reducer meds since then. The antibiotics haven't helped at all. We've had 6 or 7 visits to the vet's office and numerous blood tests. No answers.

My vet called me today and told me that the situation was urgent and I needed to take Piglet to a specialist for an ultra sound. My husband and I took her in tonight. While she was on the table, right after the doctor started the ultra sound, I heard him sigh and I knew. I kept stroking her and telling her what a good girl she was knowing there was bad news coming, crying as silently as I could.

When the doctor started to explain that there was a tumor in her spleen that had spread to her liver and there is nothing more to be done for her, my husband started to feel ill and sat down. I heard him gasping for air and looked over at him and he was twitching and unconscious.

I was holding Piglet and screaming at the top of my lungs. I thought he was going to die. He was taken to the hospital and I brought Piglet home. She has 2 to 3 weeks left to live. My husband will be given the ok after a CT scan.

Whatever good vibes or white light or prayers or ANYTHING at this point, I hope you can spare my family some.

After I got home tonight with Piglet I happened to look at the date on the calender and realized it was September 2nd. Piglet was my father's dog and he asked me to take care of her after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died on September 2nd, 2006.

She's gotta know by now how much we love her. She is the center of our universe. I don't know what I am going to do once she is gone.

My husband will be fine, but from now on, I've got to deal with this on my own because he is so fragile and that is one of the reasons I posted tonight. I feel so alone and I dread the days to come. My one good thought is that she will be with my dad once her days are over here.

Since the doctor spoke broken English. We are going to get the paperwork tomorrow and will probably find out the exact name of the cancer she has. It started in her spleen and spread to her liver and they suspect to her lungs.

59. Let me know....
PM me if you want. One of my dogs had hemangiosarcoma about 5 years ago. Her symptoms were that of what your dog has. Hemangiosarcoma affects the spleen, liver and lungs. My vet said it wasn't a cure, but asked to remove her spleen and see how she did. He said he had success with giving dogs a little more time....pain free, of course. I agreed. I think the surgery was about $650. I saw her spleen....it was cancer-ridden and had also spread. However, the surgery along with predisone therapy bought her 6 months of a very happy and painless life. The time did come when I knew it "was time."

Just thought I'd pass that on, in case you're asked about spleen removal.

I will definitely follow up with our regular vet tomorrow and find out exactly what the diagnosis is. The specialist today did mention spleen removal but he was very negative about her prognosis given the mass of tumors in her liver. I'm willing to do anything to keep her with us as long as she isn't suffering. I will PM you when I find out more information. Thank you!

65. My vet did tell me that the prognosis
For a dog with hemangiosarcoma was poor, but seemed positive about spleen removal. He said that it bought some dogs 6 weeks or more (without pain, which is important) and mine made it 6 months. I was very thankful that I opted for this procedure. I wish you luck at your regular vet.

Is the vet sure that the splenetic tumor is into the liver or is it adhered to it? Is it possible to do a liver resection? Is your vet board certified?

Prayers and hugs for you. Have you heard if your husband's CT scan is ok?

63. good questions
I was a bit out of the loop when the specialist took me into another room to discuss the details of pig's disease because my husband was passed out on the floor and the emts were working on him but the doctor did mention a liver resection. He said it was very risky for bleeding reasons? His English wasn't very good and my German is even worse. I have no idea how these doctors are qualified here.

I'm beginning to think I need a second opinion on this. Do you agree?

70. I would suggest a 2nd opinion. Make sure they are board certified or
whatever the equivalant is where you're at. If it's malignant that may be a different situation, although they do offer chemo and radiation for dogs. If it's gone to the lungs there isn't much that can be done. I can only tell you that our dog's was benign and one vet stitched up our baby after opening him up and then deciding she still couldn't determine if the tumor was adhered or into the liver. She was the one who informed me that she was not board certified and was fearful of doing a liver resection so she sent us to another vet who was. A couple days later and the board certified vet removed the tumor and found it was only adhered to the liver.

Here is a link to explain more about splenetic tumors. Be aware there are some pictures of tumors on that page and it might be hard for you to view them.

Many hugs to you and prayers for your husband and your dear dog.

69. One last picture I found of piglet I wanted to share.
She was in the kitchen with me trying to help/scavenge for food dropped on the floor. I labeled it "Can I help cook ma?"

Almost 4 in the morning over here so I'm going to try to sleep. Thanks to all who posted good wishes and suggestions. DU is a great community.

I am so, so sorry. Three years ago, I was in the ultrasound room, sobbing and wondering how I was going to explain to my husband that his best friend of a decade had anywhere from a day to 2 weeks to live (tumor in his heart that had broken off and spread to several places in his chest). You will be in my thoughts, dear.

85. Vibes for all of you -
We got a similar diagnosis on our older whippet in March - that he had cancer in all his major organs except his heart and kidneys - and that he had, at most, a month, two at the outside. He lived 5 months after that with a good quality of life, winning a food fight with our Siberian Husky not too long before his death. May your Piglet do the same and more.

87. Thank you all so much for your prayers, vibes and positive feelings
An update; my husband was released from the hospital and seems to be ok. Our regular vet has seen the ultra sound pictures and concurs with the specialist. The cancer has totally infiltrated Piglet's liver and their is nothing they can do surgically. I have an appointment with her tomorrow to discuss end of life issues. Luckily, she makes house calls so when the time comes for Pig to leave this planet, she will be in her own home in comfortable surroundings.

I've spent most of the day sobbing and trying to make Pig as comfortable as I can. Reading through this thread has touched me beyond words. Once again, thank you all.

88. When my dog died of cancer (many years ago)
in her final days I gave her people food fit for a queen. I figured that was a good way for her to go out.

94. Thanks for the update
 to your husband, Piglet and you. No one knows how much time you will have with Piglet. Enjoy your time with the little sweetie. She knows she is loved and she will be comfortable at home.

(I've had three dogs who had cancer - no one knows exactly what time is remaining....it's all been different each case).

Pig isn't suffering right now but she is going downhill very fast. I guess we will know in our hearts when the time comes to stop her pain. My heart is completely broken. She is like my child.

I have JRTs and your Piglet is just as cute and sweet looking as mine. Nothing I can say will ease your pain but enjoy your time with her and know that she will live forever in your heart and memories.

I hope all is well with your husband.

And please take care of yourself too.
