RIP Scottsdale Video. (casualty of recession/technology)
My beloved, local-owned video rental place has closed.

*sigh*

Unfortunately, I helped it die by not patronizing it lately. I've been too busy to rent movies (and poor as well).

Netflix, cable, movies on demand & cheap DVDs have been killing video stores, but this one managed to hang on because of its HUGE and DEEP catalogue of hard-to-find movies. It also catered heavily to the local Mexican immigrant population. It was really them that kept the store alive these last few years.

Anyway, now I don't have any place to go to to rent non-blockbusters or anything more than 6 months old. (Our local library has a real lousy video collection).

I can't afford Netflix or cable.

And I'm just sad to see another local business fold.....

1. Mine died years ago.
It was Neighborhood Video.

I remember it so well. It was apart of my youth. Every Friday, we'd go there, rent a movie or two and stop off at Taco Bell to pick up their packs of tacos and pig out while in front of the television.

They closed years ago.

Then there was Video Verns and that became Tophat Video, which then closed a few years ago.

Now the only rental places in my area are Hollywood Video and Blockbuster.

I miss my youth.

Hold me, Coventina.

:(

2. I'm here buddy!

I also treasure memories of checking out movies for the weekend. Just switch your Taco Bell for our Julio G's for take out! :D

Those independent video stores had "character".

Scottsdale Video put their Halloween decorations up one year, and just never took them down again! So there were always bats & stuff decorating the place. It was dank, it was impossible to tell what color the carpet originally was. But by golly, they had everything you could ever want to see.

*sigh*

3. They were family...
I mean, they knew my dad by name and they'd give us free candy and popcorn when we came in to rent movies.

I still remember the layout of the store.

Those were good times. Nothing beat watching a horror movie on a dark and stormy Friday night.

:/

6. Yeah, it was nice to patronize a place that knows you.
Again,

*sigh*

4. Most blockbusters carry a pretty good assortment of classic films...
I was able to find some pretty obscure films.

However, you might need to search Hollywood video as well.

5. Our Hollywood video closed & our Blockbuster is useless.
It doesn't even HAVE a classic movie section!

The Hollywood wasn't too bad, really. I don't know why it closed. Maybe this market is just too tight.
