Laser pointer + Cat = Endless hours of fun!
So I picked up a laser pointer today and tried out on Leo. Leo is about the most serious cat you'll meet, but when I danced that red dot around 16lb bulk, he was jumpin' around like a kitten! Never gets old.

Harumph, so what's with the red dot thing man? You know I can't resist it!

1. Just keep it out of their eyes!!!!!
A tightly focused LED flashlight is just as effective and completely safe. I've used regular flashlights since I was in elementary school (early 70's). The new LED ones come in models that really blow the cat's mind.

4. I like laser pointers
But for some reason, I found that to be mean so I stopped doing it with the kitties.

5. That's interesting. One of our cat's will stare at me with the begging eyes
knowing that I will get the "red dot" out so that he can chase it.

6. I don't know, it just felt cruel to me.
pointing it around, having them chase it then turning it off and they look at you like they have no idea what just happened. I mean, I got the cat going around in circles for several minutes. I don't know.

16. Same with my friend's cat
If he sees you reach for the pointer, he gets all alert and starts looking for the dot to chase. What's fun is to run the dot over to a furnace register and click it off. He will park himself in front of that register for an hour or more watching it, waiting for the dot to return.

7. A buddy of mine did that with his Ridgeback
I think it gave her a bit of OCD, but man it was fun. She got trained where she could nab houseflies though.. so he says...

:D

11. I was reading about Jack Russell Terriers once
it positively said that laser pointers will give JRT's OCD. Sometimes to the point that they have to be put down.

8. mine won't pounce unless I bring the dot to her
she'll stare at it intently but she won't make a move until it comes near her. Maybe that's why she's a beachball with fur.

12. Sophie ignores it
Hi,
Glad your big friend enjoys chasing. I wish mine would she just looks at the dot, then looks at the pointer, then moves on her merry way.

Peace

13. We have 3 cats, Leo's twin sister Saydee loves the red dot...
but I don't think our new boy Fred can even see it. Doesn't affect him at all.

14. It's even more fun on linoleum
If you time it right, you can get them spinning around their center of gravity with all four legs pumping... while not actually going anyplace.

Corollary to that... whatching a dizzy cat trying to catch the dot is also vastly amusing.
