If Christian Presidents swear in on a Bible...
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 01:24 PM by elfwitch
and in theory a Jewish President would swear in on a Torah or a Muslim President would swear in on the Quran, what would an Atheist/Agnostic President swear in on?

A Sears catalog?
A stack of comic books?
A copy of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?

What do you think? Going for a funny here... Be creative.

(p.s. - no intention of ANY slight to DU Atheists or Agnostics, this is just for fun - we love you guys!)

1. I Imagine That We've Already Had An Atheist President Or Two

who chose to follow the tradition of the ceremony and use the Christian bible anyway. It will be many generations before an openly atheistic candidate is elected to be US president.

32. Yeah, bigotry against Atheists is totally acceptible.
The older Bush, one of the worst people to occupy the White House until his son actually made him seem reasonable is known to have remarked that "Atheists are not Americans."

Were the impossible to happen and I was elected President, I'd probably choose the constitution as another poster suggested, although I'd secretly wish that I could get away with the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

5. The Constitution...I don't think anyone should swear on any holy text,
nor use any oath other than "I will" or "I won't"
That's what the Bible says anyhow...so there, Freepers who think that presidents should swear on the Constitution to "uphold the Bible"
According to Scripture, they should not even be using "So help me God" if I am not mis-remembering my verses here....

7. Since when does placing your hand on a book
(or claiming to be Christian) compel you to tell the truth?

The Bush admin flaunts their Christianity like none I can remember and can hardly tell the truth....

Anyway, it would be great if all elected officials swore on the Constitution, for starters!

9. If you notice, when they take the oath of office, they DON'T swear...
to tell the truth.

Presidential oath of office:

"I, (name), do solemnly swear to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States. And will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God".

That's it. No promise to tell the truth.

:-)

21. Or maybe * should have sworn in with his hand on a copy of
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

He seems to love it so much - he reads it to every children's group he has a photo-op with...

I opine that that book maxes out the talents of his reading capability...
