What kind of pet (domestic or semi-domestic) could you NOT warm up to?
For me it would be a snake. I like snakes but I couldn't have something that I would have to feed a live animal to.

And a ferret. My friends have two of them. I can play with it but just couldn't ever see myself having one.

4. Amen. Ferrets are really annoying.
I was in a band once with a guy who let his ferrets run loose. They'd crawl in my amp and wouldn't come out. They'd nip at my ankles and jump on my equipment.

I couldn't stand them. Plus....the smell. Eeeee gawd!!

5. Misconception
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 11:59 AM by wryter2000
My snakes eat frozen/thawed mice. They're better for the snake that live animals. I couldn't have snakes if I had to feed them live animals.

I can't get next to insects. I know people who have spiders and hissing cockroaches. A pet cockroach??!!

But, rethink your feelings about snakes. They're wonderful pets. Especially corn snakes. On edit: I play with my snakes everyday. That's how they get their exercise. The feel wonderful, and it's so soothing to have a snake massaging your shoulders.

18. in the hands of the ignorant, perhaps
parrots, large or small, require knowledgable owners to be good pets. but they can be the best. interactive, empathetic, and do not need to go for walks. and they talk. really have conversations.
what more could you want in a pet?

24. they can be a handful
there are a lot of screwed up birds out there, and they do take some dedication. you really have to raise them right, and lots of them are already screwed up by the time they get to the cash register.
"a girlfriend with wings." that's a pretty good one.

And I have owned 2 boa constrictors. Yes, it is sad to have to feed them mice and rats. That's why I finally got rid of them.

28. Live-feeding of snakes is a bad idea anyway
Almost all snakes can adjust to feeding of prekilled whole animals (Mice on Ice--frozen mice sold at most pet stores) or, even better, Snake Sausages. Snake Sausages are a balanced sausage-shaped food made much the same way dog and cat food is.

Live-feeding can result in injury and other problems for the snake (not to mention trauma to the critter on the menu).

31. Friends with snakes don't recommend live food
One said that they were told that live feeding makes the snake more agressive. They are tamer if they don't kill. I don't know if that is true, but I suppose that it makes sense.

32. I've kept nearly everything you CAN keep as a pet
and I love almost all of them, but most snakes are boring, and tarantulas are REALLY boring. I prefer pets that actually respond to you, and that actually like you. Mammals and birds, especially.

- What do you feed 'em, 10 pounds of coffee grounds a day?

- The shedding, dammit.

- Can they be litter-box trained? Didn't think so.

- Don't want anything that big humping my leg or the neighbor's dog.

- You can never be sure about their political/religious leanings...I've heard that some of them are communists or Buddists.
