1. Hau'oli la hanau, E Hawai'i nei!
the flag at top was designed by Kamehameha the Great himself, and has served in turn as the flag of the Kingdom, Republic, Territory and now State of Hawai'i. The eight stripes represent the eight major islands.

4. We've had fifty states for longer than we've had any other number of states.
We had 48 states from 1912 until 1959. I think that was the second-longest.

6. You are correct
It was very recently that the 50-star flag broke the record set by the 48 star flag.

You're flexing your Jeopardy muscles again. ;-)

5. Why do we still allow Hawaii to fly the Union Jack in its flag?
You'd think that after the 183 long blood-soaked years it took them to win their independence from Britain in the brutal battles of the American Revolutionary War, they'd be a little wary of that symbol.

7. Kama Aina said Kamehameha designed it
Maybe he was tweaking his new occupiers from North America. I have no idea - but it is one of a kind among state flags, just for the Union Jack.

13. Actually the Kamehamehas admired the British at least as much as they did us
the design was supposedly a blend of the two.

Years later, as American influence in the islands grew, Queen Emma (Rooke) would come out with an anti-American stance that, these days, would get her "rendered".

I didn't take my suggestion seriously, but that doesn't mean I don't take your answer seriously. :-) Thanks.

10. There's actually a bit of British soil on Hawaii, at the Captain Cook monument.

15. ????????????????
Hawaii was never claimed by Britain, nor did it have to gain independence from Britain. You might as well ask why the US flag is still a modified version of the flag of the East India Company.
