How come every character on TV named "Cooper" is called 'Coop' by his friends?

How come every character on TV named "Cooper" is called 'Coop' by his friends?
I've known several people with the name Cooper in my life. I've never called one of them Coop.

Now that I think about it, almost all Coopers on TV are men. Are people named Cooper more likely to produce male children? If so, how come the whole planet isn't overrun with Coopers by now? Or at least guys named Coop.
