Favorite Soft Cell song?
I'd have to go with Tainted Love:

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

(chorus)
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love
Tainted love

Now I know I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
You don't really want IT any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you'LL think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

(chorus...)

Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love (x2)
Touch me baby, tainted love (x2)
Tainted love (x3)

1. Oh Definately. Has to be "Tainted Love".
Reminds me so much of the GF I had at the time. Helped a lot to get over her having that song to play over, and over, and over....

:)

5. My point is that their "greatest hits" comp
would be five minutes long. Not much to choose from.

would you please please please explain why you keep dropping it constantly as a non-sequiter. I think Will Pitt's head may explode. :)

8. Thank you!
Just the point I was trying to make.

It's like asking, "What's your favorite Charles Schulz comic strip?"

10. They did have other songs
they were not hits on mainstream US radio, though I heard them on KROQ in LA. (before it was clear channel crap). I think they also had a lot more hits in the UK.

Sex Dwarf was a particular favorite of mine. Other ones I remember are It's a Mug's Game and What?

There is a greatest hits CD too:

Soft Cell Greatest Hits

I have another version of their greatest hits CD but it's packed right now.

I think the album is called "non stop erotic cabaret" another track is called "sex dwarf" and "say hello wave goodbye" is also fantastic.

17. It's a Mug's Life

It's a Mugs Game
Oh God, It's another night
And your head is feeling like a lump of lead
You should never have drunk those party fours
You should have been home being good instead
And the feeling of deja vu in the end
Is the same and again
You ran out of your silver things
And you're trying to be so high class
But you need a bath
And you hair is looking like string
And though you're nearly broke
You end up paying for all the drinks
And you tell them "Oh, it's nothing.
There's a million where those came from."
And then you whisper
To your longest suffering friend
"Please lend me a few quid."

Oh God, It's another day
And your stomach is feeling like a blown up balloon
You should have never eaten that greasy food
The doctor told you that chili is bad for you blood
And your standing at the chemist as food's
Coughing up your guts like a rap at the door
And all this for a packet of Dojo's
And the assistant gives you a wink
And you turn bright red
It's at times like this that you wish you were dead
And you take the whole packet
And you feel like you drunk a bottle of bleach
And you tell yourself "never, never again.
Not until next week anyway."

You were never one for holding drink
And you stagger off to the toilet
And you throw up like it was Christmas
And you miss the bowl
And you hit your shoes
And there's no paper towels
What else can go wrong with you
It's a choice between a cab fare home
And a packet of cigarettes
So you choose and the money sticks in the machine
And the manager says "Tough shit.
Drink up and leave"

Oh God, It's another disease
And you just got rid of the last
You were beginning to feel okay
And the friends you gave it to
Were speaking to you again
You find yourself having sex in the back of a car
And the girl underneath doesn't care
And her chewing gum is getting stuck in your hair
And your nearly there and she still doesn't care
And there's something wrong
Something that you've forgot
Oh, shit you've forgotten the rubber
And you don't want a kid
Well, deny it was you
Oh Christ, if your dad finds out
Then he'll make you stay in
And do you homework and cut your hair
And wear your school uniform out in the street
What a fate worse than death

Oh well, he can't hit you
You can hit him back
And play your records so loud
All the ones that he especially hates
Deep Purple in rock, Led Zeppelin too
Well even you hate those
Well, on second thought
I think I'll leave home and go and live in America
Because they earn more money there
And you can get away with murder

Oh, it's a mug's game
I can't wait 'til I'm twenty-one
And then tell them all to sod off

PS: The reply title is meant to be punny.

16. Sex Dwarf
Leaether Strip has an entire dedication album, Anal Cabaret.
Claus Larsen has the Midas touch; Anal Cabaret is a solid tribute to Soft Cell.

18. Hmm
I would say Torch.

I also like Mr. Self Destruct. I think of the chimp when I hear it:

Mr Self Destruct
(D. Ball/M. Almond)

Always the dreamer
But never the dead
You had a rocky road mapped out
Somewhere in your head
Anyone in your way
Was a spike in your side
With one hand in the wallet
You took them for the ride

Chorus

You could look in their eyes
You perfected a lie
Never gave them the chance
To question why
If they hit on you
Then you slammed them right back
To hell with the cool
It was up and attack

You should have seen you
When you were 18
You were the toughest little F...
I've ever seen
And with each downfall
You turned 10 foot tall
The biggest kick in the balls
You've ever been
And Dr Diablo's on his rounds again
Looking for blame
And you know that he'll diagnose
Pain again, yeah pain again
Narrow the sorrow
sick of the slick
At the doors of discovery
You had your pick
If they hit on you
Then you hit right back
Never keeping their cool
It was up and attack

Repeat chorus

Why are you feeling so torrid today?
Life has gone wild
No one blocks out the way
You even look good
Or so they say
A new lease of life flow through your body today
Nothing that looks are all to go by (shooting the A)
But anyway
The stuff is free
And you can now go to town
Building your life up and smashing it down
Building your life up and smashing it down
You can't escape from this fact of life
That existing makes you a mess
That every decision or feeling or reason
Will cause some sort of mental distress

Repeat chorus

Leave the cool for the fool (x4)
You can't escape from this fact of life
That existing makes you a mess
That every decision or feeling or reason
Will cause some sort of mental distress

Repeat chorus

Repeat...
Building your life up
(Shooting the A)
Smashing it down
...three times
