piercings and teens.
My 15-yr-old HS sophomore daughter wants her eyebrow pierced before school starts.

Big deal?

Is it time for dad to let go of the cute kid face and let her show her individuality?
My opinion in this ongoing domestic squabble is wait until your 16 - at least.

Mom is still undecided, but leaning toward an OK.

20-yr-old sister is a big NO.

It's our own personal "town hall" dinner time discussion.

:)

2. I pierced my eyebrow when I was 16.
If she does, make sure she goes to a reputable piercer running a clean shop. Also make sure she takes good care of it. Don't use anything like polysporin on it, just wash it with anti-bacterial soap and rinse it with salt water. Also, make sure she knows not to play with it while it is healing, surface piercings like the eyebrow are a little more prone to infection and rejection than some other piercings, so you want to make sure it's clean while it's healing.

5. Let people do what they want to do.
If everyone else, including a vast majority, say it's wrong, then tough.

Mind you, I no longer care if people don't have any standards of any sort... let "society" collapse. I don't care anymore.

7. The tree of fashion must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of adolescents.
I'm not sure I see any harm in it, though by now it seems a pretty damned tired way of expressing "individuality."

Is there an important dress code it would violate? Is the teen fulfilling all her responsibilities?

9. Exactly.
The first thing you see when you get into the shop that I go to is their autoclave.

13. Tell her you want one too ... and she'll lose interest
I think it is fair to make a teen wait until 18.

14. a piercing is no big thing if done right, by the right people
in a clean environment. It beats a tattoo at her age.

go for it.

15. Tell her to wait until later in the day
"Before school starts" is much too early in the morning to get a piercing.

16. I always told my kids that something like that would have to wait until they were old enough
to have it done without my permission. I didn't want to be complicit in making a decision that they might regret later.

18. If they don't like it, they can take it out
It's not a tattoo. Piercings close up.

17. Why not? As long as it's done right, she can just take it out if she gets sick of it...
and it'll heal up, no problem.

"Why did you let me do that?"

20. If you let her do it now
and she later decides it's stupid, she will have learned the lesson about body mods BEFORE she's 18 and able to walk into a tat shop and walk out 2 hours later with something she'll regret.

I say let her do it.

Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 04:25 PM by Bucky
She'll look like a freak, but with all the physics and algebra she'll have used to figure out how to do this, she's bound to earn a college scholarship.
