A Question on Reel Mowers
I want to purchase a reel mower. Does anyone here know of a good brand? While price is a minor factor, I'm more concerned with quality since I'm going to be the one pushing the mower.

DUers, I know you have the answer, all comments are appreciated.

For those who do not know, this is a reel mower

I bought it used in 1986 and it still works fine. I only use it for edges and other areas where my tractor can't go.

oh yeah, My tractor is a 1969 Wheelhorse.

11. Cool tractor! I have a 1951 TE-20
or Grey Fergie, as they are known here. It even has a V-O engine, all ready for peak oil, it will run on just about anything you can set fire to (although I haven't tried to run it on pulped freepers, it would probably make too much noise but at the same time be hopelessly underpowered, oh, and smell bad)

15. 51 was a good year - my first on earth
My 69 is a Magnum 16 with hydro and it runs like a charm.

I always wanted a Red tractor, even had a little one when I was 4.

6. I haven't noticed too many...
of the push ones before. From what I know, the most important thing is to keep the blades sharpe. The gas powered ones are fairly common for people that have warm season grass, typically bermuda. A rotary mower is more prone to scalping and doesn't do so well with the really thick grass. I have used a gas one before. It has been years. I remember it having all sorts of levers...Kevin.

7. I have one - it's the ONLY thing I have to mow my yard.
Unfortunately, I can't help you with the brand/quality issue. I bought mine off my ancient neighbor lady, a couple of years before she died.

It's OLD - and it never needs small motor repair. :)

8. We bought a good quality one in Atlanta, but we had that soft
grass (Bermuda). It was too wimpy to stand up and get chopped.

10. Great States (Scott)
I replaced my seventy-five year old mower about ten years ago with a Great States because the wheels and roller were so worn I could not adjust the cut height high enough for good water conservation.
No complaints with the Great States, I kiss the blades with a sharp file once a year, adjust set, oil and go. Heck, I can mow my four hundred sq.ft. lawn before most people can even gas up their powermower.

12. I money is not an object,
And you want to be ecologically conscientious about mowing,
And you have a relatively flat/open lawn...

I highly reccomend...

13. I like!
But don't forget an ecologically conscientious person with a limited budget could stake a goat in the yard and achieve the same results.

14. Sears sells one
a Craftsman, I think they are about 70 bucks. Nice smooth action and a wide reel, just right for a medium sized yard.
