Picture of Martian Crater "Bonneville"
Spirit has been trecking towards this huge crater almost since it landed, about 3 football fields across or so, and has finally reached the rim of the crater. It took a really neat color pano of it, which can be found here....

What I think is neat is that the heat sheild, which was jetissoned during the 'entry, decent, and landing' procedure landed right on the opposite rim and is visible in the picture...

Just one for the Mars fans...

3. Hey listen everyone...
I didn't mean to post the picture like this, but rather I copied the link into the post hoping you all could just click the link...

Is this a problem because it's so huge? Should I change it?

I don't want to lock up anyone's internet connection...

7. I believe...
It's roughly 900 feet across..

www.spaceflightnow.com has some great info all about the rovers and about space exploration..

I believe it's in the 800 and change feet range...

I get such a kick out of these pictures it ain't even funny.

4. Some jerk parked his trailer on the other side of the rim.
I used to watch MASH and think, "jesus, Korea sure looks an awful lot like southern California."

Turns out the whole damn universe look like southern California.

9. this is so cool!
Whats really neat is how un-moonlike this place is...with the atmosphere giving the place a more "earthlike" feel.,,theres a "sky".

10. If ya'll didn't notice this about it.. check this out..
(my interpretation.. best guess)

See how the surrounding landscape is a bright orange-red color?

And the interior of the crater is much darker on color.. like the object the struck the surface exposed some darker material underneath.. if you look on the upper right quadrant of the picture, it looks like a bunch of the dark stuff was blasted out of the crater at the time of impact and blanked that area outside the crater with the darker stuff..

it's what they call "ejecta"...

What do ya'll think?

11. Nice Picture BUT - took 3 minutes to load !
.
.
.

not surprising, it's almost 800k and 4000pixels wide -

that's like 4 times as wide as my monitor !

(and I'm on dial-up with a weenie Pentium 1, that don' help!)

anyhoo

here's a couple of "shrunk" ones for anyone that wants them

slightly cropped, and under 60k between the two of them

14. Simply stunning
The huge mosaic took forever to download on my creaky dial-up system, but the wait was very much worth it.

Thanks for posting it.
