I think it is about privilege,

and also integrity, and determination.

Favorite lines from film.

Vincent: "It was the last time we swam together, and out into the open sea, like always, knowing each stroke to the horizon is one we would make back to the shore.

But something was very different about that day, every time Anton tried to pull away he found me right beside him, until finally the impossible happened, it was the one moment in our lives that my brother was not as strong as he believed and I was not as weak. It was the moment that made everything else possible."

(Later in movie.)

Anton: "Where's the shore we are to far out"
Vincent: "You want to quit, you want to quit,"
Anton: "no."

Anton: "Vincent, How are you doing this Vincent, How have you done any of this, we have to go back!"
Vincent: "No Its to late for that we're closer to the other side"
Anton: "What other side you want to drown us both?"
Vincent: "You want to know how I did it, this is how I did it Anton, I never saved anything for the swim back."

1. Andf "Family Guy" jokes aside, it's about
the role that genetic testing and predisposition will have on our lives in the future. Will insurance companies, for instance, be willing to insure me because my grandfather had prostate cancer? Will certain companies hire me? Will I be allowed in certain places?

It was an excellent movie, one that disappointed people because to them, anything "science fiction" has to include laser guns and deadly robots.

7. It was pretty good, but it suffered from the presence of Ethan Hawke

2. It was forced upon me by a Genetics teacher
But I did appreciate it. I think it is also about ethics.

5. I don't see the story the same way as that.
Although the setting presented challenges, in my view the story was about overcoming those challenges and the dignity of everyone. Although it had many other themes that could be looked at also.

Also in the story the society was not considered horrible by that society, the people in the society, the ones shown in the film at least, seemed pretty happy with it. Although it is common for people not to see something as bad if that is what they have only experienced.

In that, the dystopia story allows us to look at our own world through another perspective where we can notice things, then if we can think on things, it is sometimes possible to learn from the stories.

For your premise of that story being a dystopia to be true, you would have to say our world is also a dystopia. Although you could argue about degrees, and it would also depend on your individual place in life.

10. GATTACA! GATTACA! GATTACA!

Seriously, I really enjoy the movie, although some of the plot devices aren't too logical. Like, when they report to work, there would seriously be a machine that could run a blood test, determine your DNA, and identify you within a few seconds? Wouldn't a retinal eye scan or even fingerprint be a lot more practical without involving a lot of bodily fluid, and having the worker run around with sore fingers all the time?

And if their machines are so advance, why does the screen pitch and roll like a 1950's TV set with bad vertical hold?

Or that the mission they're working on has been in planning for months/years, and they only have a one day launch window, and if Ethan's character doesn't make this launch, he'll never get to go, but at the same time, they have launches seemingly on an hourly basis, so frequent that most people don't even bother to look up?

But if you can suspend those bits of disbelief, and a few others, it's pretty cool.

11. omg about 2 weeks ago I was tempted to start a GATTACA thread
I had just watched the movie. I have a suspicion that Uma Thurman's character was also a 'love child.' I think she was hiding something and was desparate to latch on to someone who was genetically superior. She was probably attracted to Ethan Hawke because she thought he was genetically superior but also soon leaving the planet for a year and perhaps she could get pregnant, since whatever genetic flaw she had - she would be considered undesirable.
