1. It was Sci Fi
Short for Science Fiction.

Why they changed it? Makes no sense.

I'm afraid that renaming it "SyFy" will be their excuse to start showing even more non-sci-fi things than they do now - more wrestling, more reality shows, more shit that panders to the 18-24 male demographic so that SyFy becomes yet another third-rate Spike TV ripoff. So far the programming is mostly the same, and their new shows are decent or promising, so maybe it'll be ok...

22. That is correct
that is how much that channel has sold out.. they think MARKETING is their problem - NO - the problem is these horrible movies they fund. a proper sci-fi channel would fund good series like Farscape and The Invisible Man like they used to but wow how much suck that channel has turned into. now that BSG is over i don't even watch it anymore... i know i will when Caprica starts back up.. i'll probably give Stargate Universe a shot too, but my opinion of the channel has been in free fall ever since they stopped carrying the classic Doctor Who series, then cancelled The Invisible Man, and then Farscape. fuck SyFy - i will never buy any of their associated merchandise crap or however they plan to generate funds from the crappy new name change.

signed,
pissed off sci-fi fan :)

5. They were trying to go for a female audience, who traditionally
Wwo traditionally do not like SCIence FIction. Sounds like they think women are too stupid to spell phonetically, though, and anyone who doesn't like repeats of "Mansquito" or "Death Monkey" probably isn't going to start liking them due to a change in vowels anyway.

that "we cancel shows that Mudoria likes". Farscape, Stargate-SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and the list goes on...

13. They're trying to get us to talk about the name change of the channel.
And divert attention from their made-for-TV movies.

Which is a smart marketing move.

14. It's "text-ese."
Some marketing dork thinks it'll appeal more to the coveted 18-24 demographic.
