How old is the main computer you use?

6 months, but I'm moving to a more technologically updated computer soon. My HP with AMD Phenom Quad-core 1.8 GHz was a bit disappointing for a quad-core. I plan on using the new one for a long time.

3. I was considering the new i7 processor, but went with..

an Intel quad core 2.83 GHz because there will always be new advancements and was a better price for my usage.

4. Five years, and I have another that I use which is 8 years old.

I get a lot of mileage out of my Macs and I only buy a new one an average of every 4 to 5 years. I also had a Mac Quadra 700 which I bought in 1992 and stopped using in 2004, 12 years of life out of it - and it still worked when I finally gave it away.

18. Good God, I thought I was the only one. I'm typing this on a 1998 PowerBook. It's utterly

bulletproof (except for a new keyborad now and then, because I type hard). I have newer PowerBooks and a MacBookPro, but I still like the old, black, indestructible G3.

A Quadra? My, my. I still have a 7100/80 under my desk. I'll crank it up some day when I need to read a floppy disc.

But then, I moved from a 3GHz quad core with 10k RPM hard drive, high end video, and 8GB of RAM to an iMac with 4GB of RAM and a dual core 2.93GHz CPU and mid-level video.

Funny how everything has gotten faster...

Must be the operating system that's holding people with otherwise powerful hardware back...

6. My baby is 8 years old

I bought her used and (I believe) she might be the best purchase I ever made. She's won numerous design awards and despite her beauty, she works like a horse. I love her and I hope she lasts forever:

7. Mine is an IBM clone

built by my husband so I think it's at least 8 years old, maybe? He took it a couple of years ago and rebuilt the guts for me to bring it up to date and speed.

8. The case is about 7 years old.

But everything in it has been upgraded more times than I can count.
Current configuration is a Phenom tri-core black edition OC'd to 3.2 GHZ and $Gb RAM running XP X64 that's been tweaked by me.

Compaq Presario V2000. AMD Turion 64 2GHz.
2 GB RAM. 100 GB HD-30 GB free.

One damn fine machine, IMHO. Only problem was
a registry crash and that was, um, user error.

Apple's going all-Intel with OS X 10.6, however... Motorola's prices were ludicrous and there were many other, surprisingly valid and non-cynical for Apple to switch over as well... I'll always miss motorola, but if IBM made their original PC with the 68000 processor instead of the 8086 piece of ****, things would be different...

IBM had a mainframe monopoly and built the PC, deliberately underpowered, as a means to keep their monopoly going. Thankfully it failed... which is sad, really, their mainframes are top notch and PCs are harmless, demonstrated so wonderfully by the slipshod DOS and Windows operation systems...

16. 5 years. And I make my living with it. Still running Mac OS 9.2, and old versions

of Quark (5), Photoshop (5.5), Illustrator (6.0) and so on. When I go into my office in the morning, it's nice to be able to get to work three minutes after I turn the computer on.

Familiar, uncomplicated, and productive as hell. That's what I'm sticking with.

20. An ancient, groaning, lumbering piece of garbage.

7 years old. It wasn't that hot when it was new, but now it's a POS. It's so slow that it's almost impossible to get anything done with it anymore. Sadly I need it to make a living, but it's utterly painful to use these days.

24. The motherboard, processor and RAM is about 16 months old

I had to replace them because the motherboard burned out and the processor and RAM were too old to re-use. The rest is about five years old.

I probably will not upgrade for a few years, but when I do, I'll build the new one in my even older box which still has Windows 2000 on it. I like that case better anyway!

I do the same thing with my computers as I do with my trucks - run them until they break down or they can't do what I need out of them.

Office computer is 1 year old. Home computer is a cheap emachines, but works very good because I only use it for surfing the Net. Office computer is a Mac, but I don't really notice the difference between the two. They are both just as good.
