Improved 'beaver deceiver' OK'd

GROTON - The New England Forestry Foundation, owners of more than 54 acres along Route 225, again appeared before the Conservation Commission seeking permission to take steps for the control of some "ingenious" beavers working around an earthen dam and blocking the flow of water from an inlet on one side and the Nashua River on the other.

The nonprofit's Groton Place and related Sabine Woods tracts make up about 200 acres of conservation land in West Groton where a family of beavers has made its home.

Despite fencing intended to discourage the beavers, the animals have still managed to block culverts beneath the dam with debris that caretakers from time to time are forced to remove by wading into the water, according to foundation representative Richard Muehlke.

Muehlke is seeking to replace an existing "beaver deceiver" with new equipment that he believes will be more effective in preventing the beavers from clogging up the culverts.

Muehlke also asked commissioners for permission to remove vegetation from around and atop the dam, which forms a footbridge across the inlet. Muehlke said he would like to cut back existing grasses on the ends and to remove small saplings growing out of the sides of the dam that threaten to damage it if allowed to grow unchecked.
