OK Reggae Fans! A Miniquiz
This is a multipart question, and each part is progressively harder. If you really know reggae, you'll get these.

Background: I bought my first reggae album in 1972. Funky Kingston by Toots and The Maytalls. Then, i bought the Wailers, when Bunny was still in the band. Shortly after that, i bought a GREAT compilation album called "This Is Reggae" that turned me on to Jah Lion, Burning Spear, & others.

So, here's the miniquiz.

The seminal reggae hit "The Israelites" was done by what artist? Who was the guitar player on that record? What reggae hit did that guitar player have a few years later? What British band had a hit with a cover of that song?

No googling.

2. Well I know who sang the original....
I'll give the initials so that I don't spoil it. DD.

The guitar player? I have no idea, but I'll guess that it was somebody like Jimmy Cliff (Clift?) assuming that he went on to record a hit and it wasn't Bob Marley, who had many hits.

The hit that Jimmy Cliff had was of course, "The Harder They Come".

British Band who covered it? Must have been one of those ska revivalists, right? So I'll guess, the Specials.

3. Here's my guess:
Earnest Ranglin, 'A message to you Rudy?"
Covered by the Specials....?

Man, this is killin' me, I'm a big reggae freak. "Funky Kingston:" definitely on my all-time top twenty!

The answers are, for the few true reggae fans who tried:

- Desmond Dekker was the singer, songwriter.
- Junior Murvin (who also played for The Wailers) was the guitarist
- He had a hit in Britain and the Islands with "Police & Thieves"
- Covered by and a hit for The Clash (1980) I think it's on "Give 'em Enough Rope" but not sure.)

Thanks for playing "Reggae Esoterica"

6. WRONG! I know who you're talking about, but....
Junior MARVIN was the guitarist.... Junior MUrvin was acompletely different person. Two diff. guys. I remember having an argument with a fellow reggae obsessive about this, and he eventually proved me wrong about this (I thought they were the same guy.)

As to why I couldn't remember this answer in my original post... well, what is it that most reggae fans smoke to relax?
