Best language software?

I'm going to try to learn Russian - for a variety of reasons it makes sense for me.

I am not in a position to take classes - no Russian courses within 100 miles of where I live. But I can spend some time with my computer.

So - there are many software programs out there - can anyone recommend a good program or two?

2. A friend of mine learned Hebrew on Rosetta Stone

He had lessons as a kid in Hebrew school, but hadn't been near it for 40 years. Wanted to learn for a trip to Israel. I was asking his opinion because I wanted to learn Italian.

He said he LOVED Rosetta Stone and found it very useful. His Hebrew teacher turned her nose up at it, and said it wasn't good for advanced students, but again, he said he would heartily recommend it, at least for beginning/intermediate students.

I used to do some market research for Simon & Schuster, which makes the Pimsleur line. I interviewed users, and heard good things about it. I think the Pimsleur approach is different - as I recall, it's ALL listen and learn, where Rosetta Stone associates sound and pictures and written language.

I guess it depends how you learn best. I'm a more reading/visual learner, so RS would work for me, but some people are more aural learners, HATE reading, and really like Pimsleur.

learner, too. If I don't read it or write it down, odds are I won't remember it. Really good to know that about Pimsleur.

4. i'm using rosetta stone

excellent for beginners and helps build a strong foundation...it is expensive, though...
