Friendly Reminder - Use Stainless Steel Braided Hose for your washing machine
Last night my wife and I went to her parents to check on the house and water their plants while they are on vacation. As soon as we opened the door my wife asks "What is that noise" Traced it to the basement where there is a lovely little fountain coming from one of the washing machine hoses. I got soaked turning it off and we spend the rest of the night mopping squeegeeing water to the floor drain and mopping up what was left. The spray was soaking the top of the ductwork and I had to punch a hole to drain out several gallons from the ducts. Luckily it wasn't spraying the furnace/AC unit itself. He did lose his collection of boxes for every damn TV/Computer/Electronic device he has purchased in teh last 20 years.

1. Better check for rats.
Had that problem a couple of years ago. The rat had gnawed through the hose looking for water.

2. It was at a sharp bend in the hose.
Old hose. The worst thing is that this happened to them before and 1) he only replaced the one that burst and 2) He didn't even use a braided hose for the one he did replace.

3. There is also a nice plumbing device you can install
that allows you to easily turn on and off the water to the hoses. That way you leave them on only when you are running the machine.

4. This is the first upgrade to EVERY house and apartment I inhabit....
Once you've had to deal with a broken hose from a washing machine, it seems idiotic to NOT have one of these.

Also, I replace my toilet and sink lines (unless they're copper or stainless) every year. It's cheap insurance.

5. +1
And lacking that, the hoses should be replaced every couple of years before they show signs of stress.

6. wish I had the water pressure to worry about it
I have to fill mine from the top with a separate hose or it will take three days to fill. Wish they would make valves and other plumbing fixtures for gravity systems. I really hate to have to add dependence on electricity just to get water out of a faucet.
