5. Old Pink Floyd or new Pink Floyd? Old Genesis or New Genesis?
It makes a difference.

39. for me the simple answer is old for both
BUT, I do like a lot of the "new" Pink Floyd.
I stopped liking Genesis after Duke. Too poppy.

8. The Ramones. All dead but the drummer(s).
I remember a lot of other bands, such as the Seeds that were real innovators in their way, but I have been a confirmed rock fan since before they had a name for it.
Everyone from Bill Haley to Buddy Holly to Gene Vincent,
Little Richard to Brenda Lee contributed something that's still here.

10. Zep, Floyd, Santana, ELP, Dead, Yes, Rush, Aerosmith, Stones, Deep Purple, Skynyrd
i guess it stems from growing up when rock was finding it way and was open to influences from latino, country, blues, folk, classical, celtic, etc, music.

but now, jiminey christmas, contemporary rock is one huge homogeneous steaming pile of suckitude. one group of whiney middle class white boys after another...oy!

i try, i really do try to and give todays band a fair listen but it all sounds the same. boring.

and I've gained an appreciation from a more mature (?) and sophisticated (?????) perspective on some of the groups that were considered a little more lightweight during the era of the Beatles, Stones etc...and listening to The Raiders today, its clear they did some very tough, gritty rock and/or roll.:headbang:

36. I'll have to give them a listen again.
Admittedly, all I'm remembering now is the costumes they wore on stage. Not that that should matter, after some of the the getups of the 80s.

Love the Beatles, always will. Stones of course, classic too. Loved the dark poetry of Jim Morrison, although I've it too painful to listen to in recent years. It's like watching someone self-destruct in slow motion. Too creepy for me now.

Mature and sophisticated is in the eye (or mind) of the beholder, of course. Not everyone would share my penchant for Ronnie James Dio and the sword and sorcery themes he's been known to employ.

I guess I'll be listening to some Raiders on youtube now.

:)

They did some seriously good stuff. Of course, after Dio was gone, the band wasn't the same anymore.
:)

Blackmore's playing & Ronnie James Dio's singing on Blackmore's Rainbow was nothing short of magical.
