1. I don't remember what it was like - just that I wore my reversable jacket.
That was kindergarten. All I remember of the fist day of 1st grade is that I had my spiffy new Yellow Submarine lunchbox.

3. We had 65 kids in our first grade class.
I remember the smell of new books and wax paper from all the lunches.

And that it was a stuffy and airless classroom, and they were afraid to open any windows thinking one of the kids climb out and fall, for some stupid reason.

6. The fear that my big brother would forget me and I wouldn't know which bus to get on.
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 10:12 AM by Blue Diadem
That was first grade and I was 5. I didn't go to kindergarten. I have just a few memories of the entire first year of school, one was when a student was going to put a tack on the teacher's seat and I said NO and the tack ended up on my seat. I always sat with one leg under me, so it went into my knee. The other memory is when the kids all ran in the gym and ran right over her knocking her down. I can see her glasses which were on a chain fly up over her head and her big square heeled shoes go up in the air.

I don't remember her teaching after that year either.

7. It was 1953.
My mother walked me to school. I was excited about it. Unfortunately I didn't realize she was going to LEAVE me there! I figured she'd stick around. I was scared to death. I hid under the easel all moring. It felt safe there. Eventually I had to come out to pee. The second day was a lot easier.

9. I started counting on the way to school ...
... and didn't stop until I got into the classroom. That and, I was surprised to hear my kindergarten teacher talk about our "mommies and daddies" instead of our "mothers and fathers". Did she think we were babies or something?

10. I got yelled at for going to the bathroom without permission.
We had a classroom with its own bathroom. I needed to go, so I got up and went into the bathroom. The teacher came back there and grabbed me as I came out. I remember that she was REALLY pissed at me for not asking permission to go.

I was completely baffled by that because I never had to ask permission to go to the bathroom at home...

:wtf:

This was the first of many situations in my academic life where I was asking some form of that question.

12. I'm writing a short story about that.
But I can tell you that I started first grade with two cousins from both sides of the family...each side equally as sick. While other kids were crying hysterically, we were thrilled to see our parents leave just as they were thrilled to leave us. Hell, they had important drinking to get to and we didn't have to hang around fetching beers and watching our dads fist fight in someones kitchen, pissed over whatever the fuck.

So first day of school was awesome! We felt braver and better than the crybabies around us until the blackness from the pits of hell called nuns convinced us in the weeks to come that we were scum and lower than whale shit.

14. We had just moved from Ohio to Michigan.
My mother schlepped me along while enrolling
my brother in 1st grade. It was near the end
of the school year.

In Ohio, the cut-off month had been January,
in Michigan, the cut-off was Nov.20....

My birthday was Nov. 3rd.

The principal
asked about me, and my mother told her I
was too young, but it turns out I wasn't.

So...my first day in kindergarten, I was
wearing my brother's hand-me-down red
corduroy jumpsuit with a football on it.

The other girls laughed at me. Bitches.

(In those days it was unheard of for girls
to wear pants to school.)

I only had a few weeks there though, before
summer vacation started.

16. I wore a mint green dress that my grandmother made for me and I was so excited to be a schoolgirl.
Girls only wore dresses when I went to elementary school. Blue jeans were unheard of. My grandmother made many of my dresses. It was truly a simpler time.

28. Nobody cried the first day of kindergarten. But one of my friends from kindergarten...
cried the first day of first grade. I reminded him that everything had been fine the year before and that although we'd be there for the whole day now instead of just a half-day things would be fine now. He stopped crying.

19. The first day of kindergarten I was put on the wrong bus when it was time to go home.
I kept telling the driver he wasn't going anywhere near my house. He ended up taking me back to the school. My mother was waiting there.

I wasn't all that concerned by the incident but it really freaked my mother out. Can you imagine the first day of kindergarten and your kid doesn't get off the bus? And you call the school and ask "Where's my kid?" And they "Isn't she on the bus?"

First day of 1st grade I threw up...in the classroom.

Took me years to live that one down.

25. I wore a black flared skirt, white blouse, and white sweater. My
hair was short (they called it a "pixie" cut, and I looked like Scout in "To Kill a Mockingbird"). I lived just a couple of blocks from the school, so I walked. My mom took a picture of me just before I left. I was scared, and didn't want to go. I got to school, and walked into the classroom. I recognized some of the kids. My teacher, Mrs. Opal Lane, came in then, and told us that she had taught a lot of our parents when they were in first grade. My dad was one of them.

By recess, I was fine. Went out and played four-square with other kids.

Funny, there are many parts of my life that I can barely remember, but that day, I remember pretty much every detail.

29. I was very depressed when I realized that it would last all the way till I was
nearly 18.

I still feel it was mostly a waste of time at best and a pretty negative experience overall.

32. I don't remember kindergarten but
I do remember first grade. We were standing in line waiting to go in and the nuns were herding us in. There was another little girl standing next to me crying her eyes out. She was so scared. I put my arm around her and talked to her, and we stayed that way, going in together.

Little girls weren't allowed to wear slacks to school, and the chairs were only used for snack time. The rest of the time we sat on the floor. Brrrr!
