3. My family is better than your family?
Isn't the essence of royalty the concept that some people are better than others because of who their parents were?

Sounds like bullshit old world thinking to me. Fuck Royalty. Constitutional monarchy or not.

11. Talking generally. I don't really keep track, just notice it when I see it, just like
with anyone else. I know that that's a cop-out, but I just don't dwell on such things, and I would be just as hard-pressed to come up with examples of my own actions. :hi:

Marguerite's scaled down version of royalty - and the Danish royal family refused to leave Denmark when the Germans invaded.

45. I respect William and Harry
serving in the military during a time of war and volunteering to see real action instead of the comfy desk jobs everyone wanted them to take.

Compare that with the children of our congress critters only two or three of which actually signed up for the war daddy or mommy voted for.

I don't agree with the concept of royalty but I at least admire those who see that they've been handed obscene privilege and then try to give something back.

25. really, I guess I am out of touch
I see no reason to feel anything out of the ordinary for someone just because they were born into money or into families in position of power. I reserve respect and admiration for people that are altruistic and caring about themselves and others within the context of the whole community.

Intellectually and at a distance they deserve no more respect than any other people, but I am sure if I was in some sort of close proximity I would probably feel somewhat inferior or intimidated. Not sure those are the words I want but my footing would be less secure in terms of seeing that person as an equal.

(assuming I knew who it was, of course  )

I'm not going to respect, or not respect, someone just because they are part of a royal family.

However, I might be curious about them because of their royalty.

35. Hmm...
For example I greatly admire King Juan Carlos of Spain. He restored democracy to Spain, ended Franco's era of fascism and proved greatly capable of providing the foundations for a peaceful and flourishing constitutional monarchy where his citizens have enjoyed peace and stable government.

Similarly King Hussein of Jordan showed a profound interest, love and compassion for his people and emerged as a leading figure in the Mideast peace process. King Bhumibol Adulayej of Thailand is beloved among his people and known for his compassion and generosity. Princess Diana led a tortured personal and private life but did much for charity and took up unpopular social and political causes. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia instituted a number of (albeit limited) reforms to improve the quality of life for women in Saudi Arabia and modernize the country.

So I admire some royals -just as I admire other public figures -if they have sought to do good with the trappings of wealth and power that they have. That having been said, there are many royals around the world who act like entitled, spoilt brats and it reflects badly on not only themselves but on the wider royalty that they represent. In Malaysia for instance, the Sultan of Johor, has used his power to get away with murder, abuse and goodness knows what else.

Royalty is just like any other institution -it has its good and its bad representatives. I think a question such as "do you like royalty" is quite general in its context and doesn't have a straight, up-and-down "yes or no answer"

41. Yes definitely, but only in a few cases
1. Nelson Mandela was the equivalent of a prince of the Thembu branch of the AmaXhosa people. There is definitely a royal aspect of his commitment to the South African people -- a sense that he had to save them from the colonialists.

2. King Juan Carlos of Spain led his country out of fascism on the death of dictator Francisco Franco. Franco expected Juan Carlos to continue the dictatorship as a monarchy, but instead Juan Carlos quickly ushered in liberal reforms, legalized the Spanish Socialist Party and Communist Party, and then when the fascist forces launched a coup, risked his life to face them down, and went on national tv to call for continued democratization. King Juan Carlos was so popular for engineering the return to democracy in the wake of the failed coup, that the head of the Spanish Communist Party, which had originally ridiculed him, announced "we are all monarchists now."

In most cases, royalty is just silly inherited privilege. In a few cases, though, it is a form of training and brainwashing that causes the royal to so identify with his people that he would give his life for them, while he also possesses the traditional authority to command attention and respect even from his deadliest enemies.
