I have always wanted to live in New York at some point in my life.

I would love to live up there but I have always heard that it is very expensive so I don't think I would be able. I would like to visit one day. I might move to a city that is a tad close to it so I can visit often like Philadelphia.

1. Hey, me too.
Oh wait...I do live here. Took me 28 years to get here though. If you really are serious, I think you should try to make a go of it.

It's not that expensive actually as long as you're not trying to work general retail and live in Manhattan. It's actually quite doable to move to the Bronx, Staten Island or Queens and commute into the city as long as you're willing to have a roommate or two. Yes, things cost more here but that is offset by convenience and there are things you don't need here like a car: meaning no car payments, no auto insurance, gas, etc. An MTA pass is $89 for 30 days and that will get you on any subway or bus 24/7/365 and anywhere in the city.

2. Come visit.
So you can see how you like it. Although, visiting and living in are two different things. I love to visit NYC, but don't think I can live there.

It's indeed a fun city, with tons of interesting things to do and see. :)

3. That is one thing I have always wanted, too
a dream of mine. I am a lot older than you are, though, so at this point I doubt it will ever happen for me.

4. Believe me, you would not want to live in New York City
I was born and raised in New York, Brooklyn and Queens, respectively to be exact. In one sense, thank God I'm a New Yorker in exile--I could never afford to go back. I moved to Philly 10 years ago after spending exactly 19 years in the South (17 in Texas, 2 in South Carolina).

The city is very expensive to live in and you can fuhgeddaboudit when it comes to renting an apartment without accepting roomies--the rent is sky high, even in Queens. Utilities are high (the unofficial slogan of Con Edison: We work harder to con you better); the sales tax rate is 8.375%, and they tax some food (such as candy, soda, etc.), clothing, over-the-counter meds, TP, etc., but groceries you take home and cook are not taxable.

The only thing I had found to be cheaper are the groceries. I'd like to take a trip to NYC just to get the foodstuffs and deli items I can't get in Philly. New York's a great place to visit, but not to live imo.
