16. How long have you been here, Witchy?
I moved to Anchorage after visiting my parents here twice back in the early '70s, but I knew from the first time that I'd be back to stay. Even with the crazy politics, there's noplace I'd rather be. :)

28. ITA Blue! I visited Juneau and cried on the plane going home...
got a call from a friend not three months later asking if I knew anyone who'd move up and split rent in Anchorage. I told them, "give me three months to get my stuff in order and I'll be there." That was winter 96.

When I had my first son we moved back to the lower 48 for a while but moved back up here again in late 07, not moving again. We're here for good.

The crazy politics makes it fun. Living in the valley is kinda on the weird side with Palmer being laid back and Wasilla wishing it were bible central. Still, I live on a lake and the thought of moving makes my skin crawl. It's all worth it.

how Palmer and Wasilla have such different vibes for being so close to each other. I would have no problem living in Palmer, but Wasilla? I'm not so sure. I think the exodus to Wasilla began when Anchorage started becoming so diverse. Certain people can't handle that. I'm wishing Jerry Prevo would take his whole damn temple out there and everybody in it. But that would be too mean to you, so I guess we'll just have to keep dealing with him.

8. It would be easier to list the things I actually thought about first
But I suppose moving to California literally within minutes of thinking of it.

I had an email pen-pal out here who I'd never met in person who had told me that if I ever wanted to try it in California, I could stay at his house.

I'd been laid off from my construction job in Vermont in December - bad time to find work in Vermont - and had about $300 to my name in the form of my last paycheck.

On the drive back from picking up that paycheck, I decided, "Hell with it, I'm going to California." I drove back to my apartment, packed my clothes, my dogs and my saddle, left a note for my roommate that read, "Gone to California. Will call later." and began driving.

That was 11 1/2 years ago. Best move I ever made.

9. I was just getting into my car on a Friday afternoon to drive home from work, when my brother
(who manages a limo company) called me on my cell phone.

"Hey. Want to fly down to L.A. with me tonight, pick up a couple of vehicles we just purchased, and drive them back to Seattle?"

I made a quick call to my wife to let her know I was going to be gone for the weekend. Then I met my brother at Sea-Tac Airport. We flew down to L.A., stayed overnight at a nice hotel, had a good breakfast the next morning, closed the deal on the limos, then we each hopped into our respective cars, got onto I-5, and headed north. Staying within the speed limit, and with one dinner stop, we made the drive in 19 hours.

That was fun. B-)

12. Drove to NYC in subzero temps just for the hell of it
I was in college. My friends and I were sitting at breakfast on Saturday morning with no plans for the weekend. One of my friends had a boyfriend in NYC (which was about 4 hours away from our college at the northernmost edge of the Catskills) and she commented that she wanted to visit him but didn't have a car. I said, "Well, I do. Let's go."

So the three of us went back to the dorm, grabbed our toothbrushes and a change of underwear, and headed out. Trouble was, it was about 20 degrees below zero. The car worked fine but we did slide sideways around a curve on a back road...and there was a truck coming the other way. Near miss.
And then there was that stuff about driving in NYC that I didn't think about... :scared:

Her boyfriend lived in the Village, but she couldn't remember the address, so we drove around the streets she THOUGHT he lived on till she recognized the building. The heat was out, so she and her boyfriend curled up on the couch all night, and our other friend and I slept under a pile of coats on the guy's futon.

I never told my parents I did that--they would have had a double heart attack. My mom's still alive, and even though 20+ years have gone by, I'm still afraid to tell her! :D

14. Back when I was living in Maryland during my high school years....
....my friends and I were out one night and I said, "You know what? We should drive to Florida. Right now." This was in the middle of the summer, some of us had summer jobs, others didn't, but we barely had any pennies in our pocket to put together. Our plan would be to drive straight through, not stop at any hotels. We would subsist off of powdered mini donuts and drinking fountain water at the rest stops. My family did have a vacation place in St. Augustine so we would stay there. Those of us who had jobs would call in sick. We wouldn't bother to tell our parents until we got there.

So after thinking it all out, I asked out loud, "So, should we do it?" And the answer was yes. We started chanting "Carpe diem" like morons and we drove off, on our way to Florida.

Five minutes later, after we had crossed over the county line, one of us said, "You know, I don't know. I might get fired if I skip work." And pretty soon we all agreed that, no, taking a spur of the moment road trip to Florida subsisting on only mini donuts and tap water might not be the smartest idea after all.

But for a few minutes, we were so totally doing it.

and I got a PM from a friend that there was a Greater Sandplover in Bolinas Lagoon. I thought to myself "I have never heard of this bird... oh... okay... I haven't heard of it 'cause it's a FIRST NORTH AMERICAN RECORD!"

I didn't have a car, so within two hours I was on the Greyhound to San Rafael. The next morning I caught the first bus for Stinson Beach, and walked/thumbed the rest of the way. There were a brazillion birders there, and there were also some other good birds there. I had three new birds: the sandplover, Cape May Warbler, and Tufted Duck.

Epic, epic stuff. :D
