Electric Light Orchestra fans check-in
I've been listening to ELO 2 days straight. Probably one of my top 5 bands of all time (although I still think Xanadu wasn't that great of a movie, die-hards tend to suffer).

3. I was big into them around the time of "New World Record"
Although I liked the grandeur of the "Out of the Blue" album, I really wished it had been trimmed to a single record with all the "good stuff" instead of extra filler to make the double LP.

Discovery was, well, Very Disco...

And after that, maybe a couple songs caught my ear.

9. Yes but then you wouldn't have had that perfect album side - Side #3
'Concerto for a Rainy Day'. My favorite album side over everything else out there in the world including anything done by Led Zeppelin. Side #1 is also great but there are some killer songs on Side #2 and Side #4 too.

5. yo!
used to be one of my all time favorites - especially On the Third Day, El Dorado, and Face the Music

one of the best shows I ever saw too - I was sick as a dog with flu or something - sure as hell wasn't going to miss them and it was worth it. (showing my age by guessing that was 77 or 78?)

8. My very first concert ever--"Out of the Blue" tour
I remember being awed at the cello players who would raise the cellos over their heads while putting the bow to them.

"A New World Record" was just pure genius.

And their early, early stuff is really interesting.

I think Jeff Lynne is an amazing talent, both as a writer and a producer.

18. Did Katy Perry boost from ELO?
Some of the chorus of "Waking Up in Vegas" sounds an AWFUL lot like "Sweet Talking Woman" (specifically "that's what you get for waking up in Vegas" and "so sad but that's the way it's over")...?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pVihntUEVw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-pUaogoX5o

Hey, if George Harrison can get nailed for three freakin' notes, I think ELO could have a case here--! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

And I'm a sick puppy--I LIKE Xanadu. For strictly cheesefest/nostalgia purposes, of course. And the soundtrack.

26. "Laredo Tornado"
"What can you do...
...when your dream world is gone, and your friends and lovers too?"

Jeff Lynne not only got the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour orchestrated "sound"...he knew how to write some pretty damned Beatle-y lyrics too.

I liked the majority of the band's catalog, but "Laredo Tornado" has always been my top favorite.

I HAD to like it. My college friends and then roommates were nuts for ELO.

I like instrumentals, so I was okay with it. "Fire on High" is one of my favorite driving tunes--Bevan showed his bashing ability on that one.
