Just got back from the DMV
Why don't people make appointments beforehand??

I made my appointment and I was in and out in 25 minutes. There had to be about 100 people there at 12 noon waiting until they were called.

I wasn't aware that there was a new law that you had to bring your Social Security card with you and another form of ID. I could have sworn my Driver's License was a form of ID. It has my picture and address on it.

1. we don't have that option
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 12:39 PM by Kali
here it is "take a number" and they have this great little machine that churns and rattles and whirs and beeps like the medical equipment from that scene in "The Meaning of Life" and finally spits out your little piece of paper with your number on it. And even if you are the only one in the building it will be a number 4 or 5 digits after the one lit up. And the clerk will call the others before waiting on you.

4. I used to do that
Well, not quite 100 miles, but when I lived in Berkeley, I used to drive to Albany to the DMV. Very small quiet town right next door with no wait.

Now we renew by mail. I think you have to go in every 10 years or so--probably so they have a more up-to-date photo. CA and cars, doncha know.

5. A lot of people who live in FL don't know that you can make a reservation.
The rest of it, I think, is because of the Real ID (at least I think that's the name of it) Act. A misguided attempt to make state issued drivers licenses into some kind of national identity card. It will probably fail miserably, whatever its name, and all this extra nonsense will probably ultimately be for naught.
