What do you eBay?

I started eBaying about four years ago because of my love for vintage costume jewelry. I like pins and earrings that aren't like what everyone one else is wearing. I used to buy the gaudiest iridescent rhinestone pieces I could find but now my tastes have changed to thermoset and Lucite moonglow. I especially like confetti and foiled art glass cabochons.

Now I buy and sell on eBay. I buy books and CDs (but comparison shop between eBay and Amazon), housewares, gifts, and packing materials for the stuff I sell.

I've sold comics, magazines, postcards and other paper ephemera, artwork, clothing, jewelry, books, LPs, CDs, videos, and other vintage collectibles I don't collect anymore. Basically, if I don't care about it anymore, I sell it. I've done well enough that neighbors bring me stuff to sell, and give me a cut.

1. car stuff

car parts are insanely cheap on eBay. This summer I plan to sell my car on eBay and buy a new (used) one (hopefully on eBay). I also get video games and computer stuff on eBay too. Love that site :thumbsup:

2. new to EBay

I'm glad you started this thread because I'm really interested on what other people do with EBay. I've always donated my extra stuff but I have a lot of interesting, good things I've collected over the years and would like to list these items. I had bought these items with the idea I might use them in the house I'd someday buy but I bought the house five years ago and these things don't fit in.

I've bought two things on EBay--both unusual items that saved me a lot of money over buying from a store.

3. Selling is pretty easy

Their tutorials are easy to follow and their message boards are crammed with good information. Questions get answered quickly by staff and/or other members.

If you can write a clear, detailed description and can post a photo or scan of the thing you're selling, that's half the battle. Ebay limits the size of images that Mac users can post (why, I don't quite understand, I can't follow their technical explanation). I like to post big images and lots of them so I rent a little webspace on another site.

The other thing that'll help is a PayPal account. There are transaction fees that take a small chunk out of your sale, but PayPal takes a lot of the aggravation out of waiting for payments to arrive, and is a big incentive for a lot of buyers. I accept checks and money orders too, but about 85% of my buyers use PayPal.

I have had very good luck selling original comic art, and mixed results selling comics and records, but I hit the jackpot when I started selling Magic Cards.

I've gotten a number of MST3K tapes on eBay. "Manos, Hand of Fate" might be my all-time favorite, but then someone will name a different one and I'll say Yeah, that's my favorite. But only those with Joel!

The weirdest movie we ever got off eBay is "Skidoo." Directed by Otto Preminger in 1968, it's about a former mobster (Jackie Gleason) who is forced to do one last job for a mob boss (Mickey Rooney). Gleason is married to Carol Channing and they have a hippie daughter. The highlight of the movie is when Gleason drops LSD and trips out. Yep, Mr. Anatomy of a Murder directs The Great One on LSD. It is truly, mind-bogglingly bad.

6. anything I can get my hands on

Lately it has been small electronics like digital cameras. The price of shipping has gotten too high for a lot of the stuff I used to scrounge in days gone by. I'm not impressed with the prices costume jewelry fetches these days, but I remember one designer 1930s pin that I sold back in the day for over $100.

8. Lots of stuff. .

I've brought lots of stuff from Ebay over the years including out-of-print books, vintage evening purses, evening wraps, and tour books from my favorite groups from the 70's and 80's.

9. Let's see ...

I've bid on several things, but only bought a couple. I bought a vintage photographic enlarger that I still don't have a darkroom to set up in, and a small plastic Canadian Mountie figure one of whose gauntleted hands is positioned to hold a flag; but I haven't been back up north since then to get him one. Right now, he looks like ... well, never mind what he looks like.

10. houseware

i've found very cheap stuff for the home on Ebay...from shower curtains to window coverings. i also buy computer parts and auto parts...and everything in between. ebay is my #1 source of everyhting these days.

11. Buy about 2x a year, never sell.

And I don't buy anything I really need in a hurry in case the transaction goes to hell.

12. I've acquired a wide range of stuff

on Ebay. I collect old milk glass and hobnail glass. I've completed my collection of first edition Nancy Drew books. I get lots of beads on Ebay and bought a gorgeous 9X12 Persian rug. I've bought some old videos-got the original 1967 Forsyte Saga.

I've thought about selling but have to get a bit more proficient with my digital camera.

I've only had one bad transaction on Ebay. I guess I wasn't the only one because the seller was banned.

13. I just bid on a motherboard for my laptop...

that stupid little metal prong that allows the power cord to connect to computer BROKE OFF.

15. I am about to put a Troy Bilt tiller up on e-bay

Moved from country to city and don't need the tiller anymore.

Have purchased some vintage sunglasses for my wife, very good price. Located a limited edition CD I had been wanting and searching for for a couple of years, which is now a part of my CD collection thanks to e-bay. So far so good there for me.
