5. I had one of those!
It wasn't my first car, though, it was my second. I learned a whole lot of auto mechanics when I owned that car.

My first car was a 1970 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with primer patches and rust holes in the fender. The windshield wipers didn't work and I used to reach outside and work them manually, as needed. The Vega was a step up. :)

It was like driving a barge, but because it was built pre-gas crisis, had an engine that was built to go 80. Shut down many a tin can in my day.

Took my driver's license test in that thing. First up: Parallel parking. I did it without hitting any of the poles, so I have life time bragging rights & an excuse to never parallel park again. :)

53. Yah, that was me in the shark fishing thing.
I did it to eat during some lean years when I was just starting out as a magazine writer. As with everything I did, I sold a story on it to pay the bills.

The sharks were way back up in the mudflats of the bay, during late Spring and Summer. I know that article had a bunch of people bowfishing for them for several years. It could be illegal now, for all I know. I got so sick of eating shark meat that I stopped fishing for them altogether.

putrid green - we called it godzuki, son of godzilla.

The floor boards in the passenger section were rotted out and an aluminum slide was bent and secured to the floor so my passengers' feet didn't fall through.

No photo, lost things like that in Katrina. It looked something like this though only much more pathetic.

I liked it a lot. I bought my last car, a Dodge Stratus Coupe, because it reminded me so much of that little Honda. Too bad a tree limb fell on the Stratus two weeks ago and totaled it. :(

Junker or sweet ride? The thing had a manual choke, so what do you think? Got it for $125 in 1977 (maybe 1978 -- I don't remember). All that mattered to me is that it had four wheels and that it got me from point A to point B, which it did most of the time for about three years.

Here's a link. The one shown on the link is MUCH nicer than mine ever was. (Mine was white with some rust.)

74. 1950 Chrysler New Yorker
Serious junker. Black with stained gray velour interior. Paid $25 for it, used black shoe polish to wax it and sold it for $35 a week later.

80. 1973 Gremlin
I wanted a 1973 Chevy Caprice, as they were both the same price ($300) but my Dad insisted I get the Gremlin. He thought the Caprice was an old person's car. I would have felt safer in it though. He won out.

it was used when i bought it, but the moment i saw it i knew it was right. i was 17 and a junior in high school at the time. my school's mascot was the lancer and the school colors were light blue, black and white. it was kismet.

i can't find any pics that allow hyperlinking, but i did find a page that has one in a sale listing...

Could oly break 70mph going downhill, but could tow a 4,000-pound trailer if you weren't in a hurry.

Some idiot in an Oldmobile T-boned me 6 months after I got my license, and there went the Suzuki.

86. 1958 Buick Special - a sweet ride for a land barge

Unfortunately this is not the one I drove. Mine was a four door but the same color with the white hard top. And of course the big fins. It was a great car, drove so smooth. My grandmother had gotten it new, passed it along to my parents who let my older sisters drive it. Then it became mine after they went off the college.
