trying to plan my first trip to Rio for December

Does anyone have any good, solid, first-person hotel advice? or where would be the best place in the city to stay?? Travel books, booking agents and review sites can only tell me so much...

Any other things I should know are well appreciated -- BTW I'm going for New Year's celebration nd plan to stay 8 or 9 nights...
