Sumter man killed; ‘discovered’ Lizard Man

SUMTER — A man who first reported seeing a lizardlike swamp creature in Lee County 21 years ago has been shot and killed in what authorities say was an apparent drug-related incident.

Christopher Davis, 37, was shot to death June 17 in his home, authorities in Sumter County said. They have arrested one man and are searching for another in connection with the death.

Davis became an international celebrity at the age of 16 when he reported the first sighting of the legendary Lizard Man, a big-eyed monster that he said attacked his car one night during the summer of 1988.

“It was green, wetlike, about 7 feet tall and had three fingers, red eyes, skin like a lizard, snakelike scales,” Davis said at the time.
