To whom do I report mailbox vandalism?
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 09:09 AM by supernova
I woke up to find that my mailbox has been completely knocked off it's post. And my neighbor's across the street. And no, it doesn't appear that there was an accident, either.

:grr:

It happened before, but that was more than 10 years a go, and I left the damaged mailbox for just that reason. What's the point of buying a new mailbox if they're just going to ruin it again? I live on a rural road, so we get a driver on a route.

edit: for kitten writing.

2. Sherrif or police
And don't get me started on mailbox vandalism and the post office and their "it's not our problem, but if you don't have a box up, you won't get mail" meme.

4. You report to the local police, but technically, it's a federal offense
When I was in HS, a guy I knew thought it would be fun to blow up some mail boxes wit M-80s. The cops got him, and he and his folks got the shock of a lifetime when he had to appear -- not before a county judge -- but before a Federal Magistrate.

5. Notify the police and the post office.

Mail box baseball most likely? I've heard of people buying a larger mailbox, then putting a regular size size box inside it and filling the space between with concrete to remedy that situation if it happens a lot.

I have brick house so, I've considered making a brick house casing for it.

But I gotta admit the rubber thing is appealing too. :-)

I'm not all that angry because I mostly get junkmail anyway.

14. You need to be careful about reinforcing it.
In some places it's not wise to have it reinforced in such a way that it's not evident from the outside -- if the baseballer is hurt you could be liable (I forgot the legal reasoning but I think it was based on reasonable expectation of composition or something like that.) However, if you replace it with something that looks as strong as it is you'd be fine IIRC. Again, I'm no lawyer and don't play one on DU.

We had ours knocked out of the ground last year but the SO figured that it was a good excuse to replace the rotting post. If it happens again soon I doubt that we'll take it as well. Our neighbor across the street has a brick column with the mailbox inside so I think there's been a history of mailbox baseball around here. :D

6. local law enforcement
my neighborhood went through a rash of mailbox "beheadings" last year. the guilty dumbass ratted out himself after he took a swing at one that had been reinforced with a rubber like substance. The baseball bat he was using bounced back and knocked him out (he was hanging out a car window at the time) so his partners in dumbassery ended up taking him to the hospital where he told the ER crew what happened. :eyes:

9. My father solved this problem nicely
Heavy duty mailbox welded to a steel column embedded in four feet of concrete.

No more beheadings, but the drunk guy in the Corvette that slammed into it got quite a surprise!
