I just found this old poem I wrote, many years ago:

[Haole Girl]

"Driftwood"

I found a piece of driftwood
It was weathered with age
It had been a long time since it
served any useful purpose
Since it was a part of life,
that is

With it
I wrote your name in the sand
And I liked the way it looked
But I knew
it was only a matter of time
before it would wash away

So I waited awhile
on that beach
admiring it
as long as I could
And, sure enough,
the inevitable happened
and the tide washed away
your name

I wondered what to do with that
little piece of driftwood
..throw it back into the sea?

And I wondered for a moment
if it would eventually wash onto
another beach
or be lost at sea forever

And in the sea
it went

The sun was setting
It's strange how a sunset can feel warm
even though it is a cool time of the day

It was time for me to turn my back to
the setting sun
I turned around a few times
before I climbed the hill to return home

I wish I could have stayed longer
The warmth of the sunset
cooled all too quickly.
