Organic Wine? Anybody?
Edited on Tue Jun-23-09 08:04 PM by Mike 03
I've been reading a book about the impact of food and beverages on our hormones, and there is a suggestion in this book that those of us who wish to drink wine find organic wine.

I'm game. Is this difficult? Are organic wines highly available? Do any recognizable brands make organic wines?

I'm very enthusiastic about trying this, because I've noticed in the past that drinking even a very small amount (one or two glasses) or red or even white wine can give me an excruciating headache, and this book claims that organic wines don't trigger migraines (in most cases).

The last question: Are they a lot more expensive than non-organic wines?

Suggestions are welcome.

ON EDIT:

Suggestions are welcome to the extent they are permitted by the rules of DU.

1. it's usually sulfites that give people headaches
and I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but I think they ARE organic - they are added at bottleing so have now bearing on how the grapes were grown.

You could try googling "organic wine"

6. Yes, I googled on this topic, and there was some good info.
I wanted some first hand advice. Some of the Google stuff made me skeptical; it seemed too good to be true.

2. My favorite:
http://chinabend.com">China Bend makes a marechal foch, which is pretty unusual. It's organic and vegan.

Really, really nice.

3. Ugh. No. Organic wine tends to suck balls.
The prices are high because people want the cache of organic wine (and it costs a lot to grow).

The science of winemaking has made good wine common and affordable. We should not be afraid of science. It is a good thing.

ON SECOND THOUGHT: If regular wine is giving you headaches, by all means try organic.

I think Whole Foods carry some. They are out there.

Wine makes people happy. More people should drink it.

9. No it doesn't. It's perfectly fine.
It's hard to even tell a difference.

10. About 20 years ago I bought two bottles of "organic"
wine. The first bottle I drank 2 or 3 years after buying, gads it was awful, but the second bottle I let sit for about 12+ years., a lot better.

4. Most organic wines say “No added sulfites”, and I have found they don’t cause migraines.
They usually run under $20. Better groceries have an actual organic division in their wine “cellar” section of the store. Our PCCs and Whole Foods have larger selections than other stores. Trader Joe’s also has a few different ones.

Avoid like death the Frey, it is undrinkable. Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon (California) is pretty good. There is some good French Beaujolais and other wines from Spain as well.

What we have found is some of the older vineyards in Europe have always used green techniques, they are just recently getting registered as such, a nice red from Spain, Luzon Verde, is one of these. (We like the reds)

12. Same here.
Both stores are good places to look for anything organic if one can't find it in the other supermarkets.

8. If sulfites bother you, then organic is the trick. Pop the cork and enjoy.
Was at a big street party last weekend that featured organic wines. Some were quite good. There are all prices of wine, good and bad, organic, free range, grass fed, not BGH. You should be able find something to your taste.
