Poll question: Scotch Drinkers - Single Malt or Blended
I'm slightly in love with Dewars. I drink a single now and then if someone else buys but I have to admit that Blended Scotch on ice with a splash of water is my drink of choice.

What do you like and why?
Brands?

1. Right now Cardhu
a very pleasant single malt. Single malts are my favorite because they are all so different. But I don't mind a blend either. Any scotch is nectar of the Gods - even JWRed in a pinch.

2. I was at a Scotch tasting for restaurants
At each distributor table they'd have 3 or 4 to try. You'd get this little paper cup with maybe 1/16 shot.

Each one seemed better than the last but I can't remember a single name.

4. Can't afford the good stuff.
I get by with 100 pipers or Lady Lee or
Passport or Johnny Walker Red when I can
splurge.

6. single malt
because they're pure-breds. blendeds are just mutts.

all singles are good for the variety alone. I kinda like Isle of Jura as its reasonably priced and I like it's character.

why would you ruin good scotch by putting water in it ? Do you put A-1 on steaks too ?

14. You ever heard of warm milk and scotch?
It isn't as bad as it sounds. Of course I wouldn't do it to a good scotch.

8. strictly single malt...
though the lovely economy and lack of a decent job dictates buying whatever's on sale...fond of Glennfiddich, Glennlivet, Laiphrogg...drinking Cairnluish as I type. It was on sale. Not bad. Though I got this at a local chain, I usually buy at Trader Joe's. My "part of the world" ain't sophisticated enough for yer average shop to stock single malts- and when they do, they're ridiculously overpriced. (and that is just one reason that I am so misunderstood around here...I think.) x(

11. I like them both
I drink more single (I like Lagavulin) than blended, tho. I'll even mix up a Rusty Nail now and then.

18. Laphroaig kicks ass.
It may well be my favorite malt (with the possible exception of Higland Park).

Of course, if you're just starting out on Scotch, you may wanna warm your palate up on some less (erm) DISTINCTIVE (and less expensive) malts like Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. Then work your way toward the Islays.

13. I found a decently priced 'single' malt ...
The Dalmores ...

BUT: ... it qualifies itself as a 'single HIGHLAND malt' Scotch ...

I have NO idea what this means ...

The Dalmores ... $19.95 USD for 750 mL ....

I thought this was a great price for a single malt ...

17. That just means it comes from the Highlands.
Auchentoshan is a lowland malt, Lagavulin an Islay malt. The Dalmores, on the other hand, is a Highland malt.

23. This Scotch website is worth visiting for the prose.
The Dalmore 21-year-old

It's a breezy Spring evening. You've finished dinner and wandered out to the porch to collect your thoughts and wind down from a long day. Occasionally there's a shimmering glow from distant lightning, trailed haltingly, by the low rumble of muffled thunder. You stroll back into the house and pour a measure of whisky...

What whisky would you choose? There are many that would be appropriate, but one that immediately comes to mind is The Dalmore 21-year-old. It's a rich expression of a mature, Northern Highland malt -- soft, smooth, well-balanced, with a sherry presence and distinctive notes of oranges and chocolate. Add some hints of smoke, a little oak, a whiff of salt air, and you have a wonderful, complex malt.

Its very complexity begs for introspection, and its balance hints of answers to questions that haven't yet been put into words.
