Is it possible for corporate crap music to ever sneak in and be considered a classic?
Or, do the cosmic gods of music somehow manage to keep this from happening?

1. Anything is possible,
but the idea scares me.

Still, the Eagles continue to play fat-paying private corporate events, so I'm always scared........................

2. I can give you an example of the complete opposite...
...classic music that went corporate and somehow managed to avoid becoming crap...

...Nick Drake's cult classic "Pink Moon," used in the Volkswagen commercials. If I remember correctly, there were several different versions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIOW9fLT9eY

It DID open up Drake's legacy to a whole new audience...the song received an immediate positive "Who IS that" reaction and his CDs started selling again. Too bad he wasn't alive to enjoy it.

In a "similar but different" vein, Marc Bolan's "20th Century Boy" also found its way into a car commercial, but while he was alive, Bolan was perhaps the most crassly commercial musician on the planet. The jury's still out on whether style outweighed substance in T-Rex. I vote for "style," but I know the man had his fans.

Couldn't find the commercial video for that one...here's the standard version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylww2dOW7fg

4. And if you hadn't mentioned it here...
...I might never have discovered Nick Drake. Not sure how I've been alive for so many decades without running across this loveliness.

Thanks.

6. I remember and love that commercial. I love Nick Drake. I love quiet, moonlit nights.
That ad definitely knew how to appeal to me. Not that I own a VW, but still.

7. I loved that commercial.
It set a great mood.....just driving in the country at night. The music really added to it, and I'm glad that it actually gave the singer some posthumous attention.

9. ms mitchum and I also tangle over the Marc Bolan style vs substance question...
I come down on style and she says substance.
She is wrong :)

5. Or pretty much the entire KISS catalogue.
They blatantly wave the cheese in our faces, and still rock like hell. That's the joke.

8. On that topic, most radio stations only play 8-10 songs.
I haven't listened to much radio, I tend to find music I like via Pandora and Amazon recommendations, etc.

But, my cubicle neighbor listens to a hip-hop and r/b station that really only plays about 8 songs. If I hear a song, in an hour and 10 minutes or so, they will play it again. One can only tolerate Beyonce so much. Honestly, there are good artists out there. There is plenty of new and older r&b that they don't have to play only 8 songs. Play some India Arie or Anthony Jones or something. I think I need to tell the cubicle neighbor that I can't concentrate listening to that shit.
