Anyone know of really high quality model car kits- boats or airplanes?
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 04:11 PM by fujiyama
I'm sitting here at my desk and am looking at the really beautiful die cast model of a truck (they sold them at a small gift shop at the last job I was at). It's really impressive looking and it's not a toy as it even says. Really nice 1:53 scale model.

It got me thinking. Anyone actually use any good kits? I'm not talking about the cheap plastic ones I glued together as kids, but something much higher quality? Maybe with some classic cars or something. It might be cool.

1. Go to a hobby store.
They have all kinds of models from "easy" to "damned near impossible."

2. Yeah, the hobby store.
Probably something by Tamiya.

I've never partaken, but some of those F1 cars made me want to start sniffing glue! (again!)
There's a 1/12 scale Lotus 78 on ebay....

www.zealot.com/forum/index.php mainly card models

and www.scale-models.co.uk/forumindex.php various model types

Hobby forums, info on kits, etc, from all over the world.
There are a lot of European kits that are incredible.

I used to build balsa and tissue planes, haven't done so for near 20 years, but every so often I take a look just to see what's going on...

Enjoy!!!

:hi:

5. You might also consider PMing The Magistrate
That gentleman really knows airplane models, though as he mentions in the linked thread, he usually builds from scratch: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5739344

7. Don't knock the cheap plastic ones we built as kids
The challenge was to make them look good, which involved a lot of sanding, filing, puttying, and skillful painting with tiny brushes.

Does anyone else here remember Tom Daniel of "Red Baron" and "Beer Wagon" fame?

8. Yankee Model Works
Formerly Blue Water Navy. They make resin ship models. http://www.yankeemodelworks.com/

USS Enterprise CV-6 aircraft carrier $750. http://www.yankeemodelworks.com/35054_enterprise.htm

They offer one of the few kits of the never built USS Montana BB67 "super" battleship. http://www.yankeemodelworks.com/35059_montana.htm

Four triple 16" gun turrets as opposed to three triple 16" gun turrets of the Iowa class. Would have been too big to fit through the Panama Canal.
