An evening with Theodore Bikel and a LOT of friends
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 04:08 AM by DFW
I still can't believe Theo was 85 today. He was out there on the stage half the time,
plus at the reception and the cast party afterward. I left just after 1:30 AM. Theo
shouted "da-MOY! (home!)" and I agreed. I was zapped and I have to fly back to Germany
tomorrow.

At the pre-show reception, I got to meet some of my teenage musical heroes, such as
Tom Paxton and Peter Yarrow (as in PPM). I also had a funny encounter with a woman
who I thought looked familiar, and she said she thought she recognized me as well.
Well, as it turned out, we had never met or heard of each other before, but she
turned out to be one amazing musical talent. Her name was Susan Werner, and she
was so good, some people here must be fans of hers. Arlo Guthrie, to my disappointment,
didn't show up for the reception or the cast party, so I never got to meet him.
He showed up on stage and disappeared immediately after the performance. There
was an accordionist from Bosnia who now lives in Holland whom I may see again
tomorrow, as her flight back to Amsterdam leaves just after my flight to Paris, and
KLM and Air France should be in the same terminal now.

There were many other musical talents too numerous to list. The show was an absolute
delight. Klezmer, American folk by Peter and Paul (Mary Travers is still suffering
from cancer treatment and was too weak to come), Alan Alda acting as MC. We sat
right next to Dr. Ruth, and she nearly fell over when she saw us (I brought my
elder daughter). Theo closed the show with Dorogoi Dlinnuyu, which is an old Russian
folk song ("Via the long road!), but better known in the UK and the USA as "Those
were the days," with Theo singing the first verse in the original Russian, and then
all the others adding verses they had written about Theo in English, and then singing
the chorus to "Those were the days." There was a lesson of the magic and the universality
of music, seeing Theo Bikel, Tom Paxton, Arlo Guthrie and a host of Klezmer musicians singing
together.

Theo told me that the city of Vienna, Austria, from which he fled for his life as a Jew
in the Nazi era so many decades ago, is offering him a decoration as an honored son of
the city, and we may get together there later this year if it happens before I have to
leave again for the States.

My head is still swimming from it all and I have already fallen alseep twice trying to
write this. My daughter took two photos, which I hope to publish soon. The whole event
was simultaneously a charity fundraiser for the Juvenile Law Center, which helps out
under-age kids who need legal representation but can't afford it. They are the ones who
helped uncover the corrupt judge in Pennsylvania who was in cahoots financially with
the detention center who got money when he sent them there. DU had posts covering the
scandal when it broke.

The whole event was the brain-child of Theo's wife Tamara, who is both an accomplished
pianist and conductor in her own right.

Those Were the Days

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm0iQz24Aac
(not exactly Theo, but part in Russian)

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

16. Theo is unique in that respect
One side you never get to see of him on TV or in film is his amazing ability as a story-teller.
Just telling about events he has seen or knows about could keep an audience spellbound for hours,
and almost no one knows about it. Can't leave out those Palmolive lotion commercials, after all, can we?

15. Do you think so?
I get the impression that many who hang in GD would consider it grandstanding on my part, rather than
a story about a cool evening with some of the country's most outstanding musician-activists.

Still, if you think it would interest the gang, I'll do that when my daughter sends me the pics that
she took. Bob Schwartz of the Juvenile Law Center, for whom the benefit was held, promised me some pics
that his photogs took during the reception. They even took one of me and Susan Werner, chummy as if we
had been pals for decades, instead of just having just met 2 minutes earlier!

24. Danke schön!
Not a dull moment--I went down to Köln with my wife for the Eagles concert, got 3 hours sleep, got
up to fly down to Paris, just got back to Düsseldorf, and have to be in Brussels by 10:00 AM tomorrow.

No contributions of strong coffee, tea, or oxygen refused.

28. Except for my family
Music is THE great love of my life, that's for sure. I have guitars, keyboards, balalaikas,
etc. all around the house--houses if you count both Dallas and Germany. If I had to live
either without music or without food, I think I'd starve from malnutrition.

Have to get for Brussels in 5 hours. This weekend, it would require Houdini (or Leo Kottke live)
to get me out of bed!

29. sending more wishes for safe travels and hope the weekend
gives you the down time to rest and enjoy more music.

A quick tale about my father. He loved music too, though he wasn't musical - he did love to sing. When we were little - toddlers, he made a point of taking us to dinner for our birthdays. It was dad and the bday kid sharing a special night.

I remember when I was about 5 or so, he took me to Gus Stevens Supper Club, a nightclub - hot spot on the Coast that was known for its good food and its up and coming performers. Elvis played there, Andy Griffin, Jayne Mansfield last public appearance was at Gus Stevens.

I was all dressed up and out with my daddy, daddy's little girl got to order what she wanted for dinner, steak like daddy's (he got a kick out of how much I loved a good steak) and she got to have two shirley temples. The restaurant patrons clapped for her when they announced that it was her birthday from the band stand.

I don't know if Wayne Newton was there that night or not, the records from the club are long gone. But the song "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" always will have a place in my heart and will remind me of my dad. It could have been on the radio that night and he could have been singing it on the ride to dinner.

A magical time, and it doesn't matter what age it happens, enjoying a special night with dad is a beautiful gift that will remain in a daughter's heart forever.
