Chuck Berry Rocks

Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens...
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood,
Where lived a country boy name of Johnny B. Goode...
He never ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play the guitar just like ringing a bell.

(Chorus)Go GoGo Johnny GoGo GoJohnny B. Goode

He use to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
And sit beneath the trees by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineers used to see him sitting in the shade,
Strumming to the rhythm that the drivers made.
People passing by would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play

(Chorus)

His mother told him someday you would be a man,
And you would be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights "Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight!"

(Chorus)

1. Yes he does.
I had a chance many years ago to see him on his 60's birthday tour. He played with Ron Wood.
A truly incredible concert.
I was a young punk at the time and wanted to make sure I saw all the old greats before the passed away.
Jerry Lee, Fats, Bo Diddily, Carl Perkins, etc.

Chuck Berry put on the best show of them all.

Although Jerry Lee Lewis was rockin' the house at the old Lone Star in NYC when I saw him, he stopped mid show to go throw up in the bathroom. Sadly, the show at that point, was over. Right in the middle of Great Balls of Fire too. :/
I went to go see him yet again 3 nights later (hoping for a full show) at the Westberry Music Fair. His back up band came out, did a great job warming up the crowd, the place was ready to go absolutely ape shit when he was to come out, but the band kept playing without him. and kept playing and playing...until some suit comes out and before the words, "I'm sorry Mr. Lewis can not play tonight", finished coming out of his mouth, some guy behind me yells out, "I want my money back!!!" followed by the chanting of "bullshit, bullshit, etc." by everyone else.

so I went to see Jerry Lee twice but only saw half a show.

That is why Chuck Berry rocks. He's professional and doesn't drink like a fish.

2. I like Jerry lee, too
Bo diddly, chuck berry, they were awesome musicians and performers. I can't think of another musician who can make me smile within an instant of hearing their song.

Sorry about your misfortunate "unconcert". That would've been very disappointing.

5. He does rock and
it's a shame many will only remember him for the pice of crap "My ding-a-ling"

Oh, arrested on charges over unemployment
He was sitting in the witness stand.
The judges wife called a district attorney
She said free that browned eye man
If you want your job you better free that brown eyed handsome man.

Well, flying across the desert in a TWA,
I saw a woman walkin' in the sand.
She'd be walking thirty miles en route to bombay
To meet a brown eyed handsome man,
Her destination was a brown eyed handsome man.

Way back in history three thousand years,
In fact ever since the world began,
There's been a whole lotta good women shedding tears
Over a brown eyed handsome man,
A lot of trouble was a brown eyed handsome man.

Well, a beautiful daughter couldn't make up her mind
Between a doctor and a lawyer man.
Her mother told her daughter go out and find yourself
A brown eyed handsome man,
Just like your daddy was, a brown eyed handsome man.

Well, the milo de venus was a beautiful lass,
She had the world in the palm of her hand
She lost both her arms in a wrestling match
To win a brown eyed handsome man,
She fought and won herself a brown eyed handsome man.

Well, a two, three the count with nobody home
He hit a hi'flyer into the stand.
A rounded third he was a-headin' for home
It was a brown eyed handsome man that won the game.
It was a brown eyed handsome man.
:)

6. Go rent Cadillac Records,
if you haven't already. Moz Def (I am sure I spelled that wrong), does a great Chuck. He only shows up in the last half of the movie, but he totally makes the movie. Most definitely should have been nominated for an award, it is a great spot on performance.

10. Mos Def - he really surprised me - he is a fine actor. He was in several
movies I saw recently and he just really impressed me.

Chuck Berry deserves a very special place in the hall of fame - his lyrics are like American folk poetry and he plays the guitar like ringin' a bell.
He also wrote a book - an autobiography - that is really worth the time - he is a very intelligent and interesting man.

7. You need to hear the "London Sessions" version of "Johnny B. Goode"...

...which is actually a mash-up of "Johnny B. Goode" and berry's "sequel" song, "Bye Bye Johnny."

The crowd goes capital-C CRAZY, chanting in a mass, thick British accent "We want CHOOK! We want CHOOK!"

I have a mix CD I made of his greatest hits, which I ended up calling "We Want Chook"...

..anyway, the MC starts getting angry and lecturing the crowd about the people standing outside waiting to see Pink Floyd, which won't happen unless the clear out, and they keep chanting "WE WANT CHOOK! WE WANT CHOOK!"

Meanwhile, Berry's performance on the tract is pretty high octane. The "London Sessions" album is famous for spawning "My Ding A Ling," but the reason to own it is "Johnny B. Goode."
