1. I usually listen to last.fm and pandora.com
both are internet radio sites which recommend music based on what you like. I love them and have discovered some great things this way.

Ironically, I've heard some folks in the music industry seem to want to make sites like this too expensive to operate, despite the fact that I have bought quite a bit of new music I've heard. It's almost like they never learn.

7. Amazingly, hardly any.
I use Myspace for music, and occasionally last.fm, but that's about it, at least on any regular basis.

Almost all my music comes to me, literally. I have a shared folder with my friend on our PCs, and he puts about a dozen CDs per week in there for me to check out. Even for me it's almost overload. I read Skyscaper and The Wire magazines (though Skyscaper is going under, sadly) for choosing my own new stuff to listen to. They cover pretty much everything and have tons of solid reviews.

8. Hi, Forkboy
On MySpace, pretty much all I do is add music artists as friends and request friendship from them, listen to music, and check the profiles. Anything else there is a bit risky IMO.

You know my taste pretty well here, so does anything in my sputnikmusic ratings surprise you? Or are they pretty much as expected? :hi:

9. Yes, I'm surprised you haven't rated any Cannibal Corpse.

No real surprises. You're like me, you like a ton of stuff, but we stay within certain parameters with our tastes. But everything you listen to or that I listen to has some common thread, even if it isn't necessarily an obvious surface connection. For me, I notice that almost everything I've liked has a sense of personal freedom and a certain disdain for rules, in music or life. It could be a 2 minute punk song by Green Day or a 30 minute dirge by Khanate. They both share an underlying sense of freedom and openness to different sounds and ideas that has always held a very strong appeal to me. Instead of listening to people say why they shouldn't do something, most of the bands I listen to ask, "Why not?" instead. I like that. :)

13. Understood
What do you think the common thread with me is? I'd say maybe melodic, some craft put in, not super heavy, and I tend to like a lot of female singers. :hi:

16. That's pretty much what I would have said.
The melody part especially. The few heavier things you've mentioned liking (Metallica, Green Day, Bad Religion, Cheap Trick, etc) all have strong melodies (Metallica does so more with instruments, the others vocally). And female singers tend to be better at melodies than men, so that stays consistent with the melody thing.

I'll never get people who say there's no good music these days. Sure, there's more garbage, but there's also more good stuff, and it doesn't matter what genre one prefers because there's something out there that fits every taste...and then some. :)

18. Yep, I know what you mean
It seems that there is plenty of good classic rock done by males (like the Beatles,) but nowadays, melody seems to be more of a focus of female artists.

I am glad there are sites like DU to point out various music for those not happy with much of what they have heard. In fact, there's somewhat of a singer songwriter and power pop boom going on. You can even hear it in the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus. I know I've found quite a few artists based on posts here.

Nice talking with you again, Forkboy. :hi:

14. None, really. I have an extensive entertainment library made up of books...
thanks to my sister, who has added to my collection many times over the years.

Of course, I do visit youtube from time to time for music, and I occasionally buy an mp3 from Amazon.

17. songfacts.com
Songfacts is a website devoted to song information compiled by music enthusiasts, radio professionals and songwriters, who are often interviewed to determine the stories behind their songs.

Songfacts was founded by Carl Wiser, a radio disc jockey in Hartford, Connecticut. He compiled a database of song information to help prepare his radio show, then put the database online as Songfacts in August, 1999.

In the August 2004 issue of Men's Journal, Songfacts is listed as one of the 100 Best Websites For Guys. "Songfacts.com: Trivia, rumors, legends, and correct lyrics of rock songs. A must if you like to bore people in bars." USA Weekend has praised it as "a virtual Behind the Music."

26. Here you go:
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 02:36 AM by riverdeep
I uploaded the version for you. It's off a cassette and I don't like Dolby cause it kills the highs, so it's a bit hissy. Personally, I'd rather have the full dynamic range and a little hiss. It's streaming audio; you can listen to make sure it's what you want, and then right-click link and select "Save Link As" and choose your location to download. It's a little over four minutes and 5.69 MBs.

edit: I'll be discontinuing hosting it in a couple of days to save space, so get it soon.
