So I bought the "Live Aid" DVD set a few weeks ago...
and I finally got a chance to watch part of it yesterday. (I bought it during Border's 50% off sale, otherwise I never could have afforded it!)

I finally turned it off during the second disc (David Bowie - I really liked him in that era) because I realized that my plan of having it on in the background while doing housework wasn't working out too well. (I was doing more sitting and watching than cleaning!) But it sure was fun to watch!

I was in high school when Live Aid happened (well, it was the summer before my senior year). I'll never forget it. I have parts of it recorded on a VHS tape, somewhere. I don't know what kind of condition it's in, so I'm glad to have the DVDs.

I was really sad to read that some of the footage has been lost forever! What a bummer. It seems that the Tears for Fears part has been lost, as it's not on the DVDs. :-(

Anyway, I kind of realized that I am really getting to be an old fogey, because watching that footage made me realize how much I'm still rooted in the 80s. Those big, oversized shirts? I still wear 'em. I still adore that hairstyle all the guys had with the spikey hair on top and long in the back.

I also remembered how much I loved that Nik Kershaw song, "Wouldn't It Be Good." I'm going to have to try and get that into my collection.

The footage of the Condcorde taking off from London made my heart ache a little. I never flew it, but I miss the Concorde. (Heck, I can't afford to fly Southwest, but the Concorde was cool).

The footage of U2 is awesome! That footage was burned into my memory, and it felt like it happened just yesterday rather than 20 years ago when I watched it again.

It's amazing no one was crushed, trampled, or died of heat stroke that day, as you look at the crowds.

I was happy to read in the liner notes that so much good was done from that concert, and that the foundation continues to do good work.

Well, I just wanted to share some memories.

Anyone else have nostalgia for Live Aid?

1. I recently found the Queen Live Aid DVD at the library - truly awesome!
A lot of my favorites performed for Live Aid. It also got me interested in Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats.

3. I think Queen played the longest set of anyone at Live Aid
I have to admit, I was never a Queen fan. I just never "grokked" them for whatever reason.

I did watch their entire performance yesterday, though. I couldn't help wondering if Freddy was already sick by then. He didn't look or sound like sick, though.

RIP, Mr. Mercury. :-(

2. I always thought I'd get a chance to fly the Concorde...
I don't know why but it was always on my list of things I'd like to do one day.

I think i'd enjoy watching Live Aid now and really paying attention this time. :)

4. I remember watching that.
And Phil Collins playing both events by flying on the Concorde. That was really weird, kind of blew the fourth wall out of the TV. Like he had gone into some time warp or something. It actually gave me a better understanding of geography and media production though, that things on TV actually do take place in the real world.

5. The best part of Live Aid was Queen

6. Nah! It was U2!!!
But I did find Queen good enough to sit through. Some of the other acts I ended up fast-forwarding through to the next...

7. I was there.
JFK stadium. Got to see Led Zeppelin. Although it was not a great performance, which is why it's not on the DVD, no one cared at the time. I was 15.

9. Wasn't it the first time Plant & what's-his-name (the guitarist-Page?)
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 04:14 PM by Coventina
had been together since the band had broken up?

I seem to remember hearing that at the time.
(I was a punk/new-wave gal, not into classic rock so I wasn't paying a lot of attention).
I haven't gotten to that segment of the DVDs yet, I just finished the Pretenders part.

eta: cool that you were there!

8. I was there, backstage at JFK
in Philadelphia. My (then) brand-new son-in-law was performing - he broke into his scheduled tour to do Live Aid - and invited me to come along.

All I could think of, looking out at that audience, was how easily he could be shot.

I have no idea how any of those performers do it.

But, it was breathtaking...................

Did you get to meet anyone that you were excited to meet?
